Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D.--South Dakota State went on a 30-7 run over the final 14:30 of the first
half and defeated North Dakota State 62-51 in the quarterfinals of the
Summit League Basketball Championships Sunday afternoon before a quarterfinal record crowd of 5,433 at the Sioux
Falls Arena.
NDSU got off to a
good start, opening with a 13-6 lead as Janae Burich (6) and Katie
Birkel (5) combined for 11 points. Trailing 15-9, the Jacks erupted for a
14-0 run, starting with a layup by Leah Dietel and ending six minutes
later with a layup by Jen Schuttloffel.
Then, leading 27-20,
the Jacks launched a 9-0 run, pushing its lead to 36-20 on two free
throws by Kirsten Rotert with two minutes left in the half. The score
was 39-22 at the break.
NDSU stayed within
striking distance, trailing 45-34 after a layup by Dani DeGagne with
13:13 to play. But the Jacks had one more run left, scoring 15
unanswered points, opening its biggest lead at 60-34 on Dietel's layup
with 6:40 to play.
The Jacks, winning
for the ninth time in ten games, improved to 17-13 and will face
second-seeded IPFW (20-9) in the 2:30 p.m. semifinal game Monday
afternoon.
SDSU shot 56 percent
for the first half (15-of-27 including 5-of-9 three-pointers) and
finished the game at 47 percent (25-of-53). NDSU shot 36 percent
(20-of-55). Each team had 33 rebounds as freshman Hannah Strop led the
Jacks with six while Abby Plucker led the Bison with nine.
Sophomore Katie
Lingle led SDSU's balanced offense with 15 points as she hit 7-of-9
field goal attempts. Jill Young added 12 points including a pair of
three-pointers.
Burich led NDSU with 18 points, hitting 7-of-10 from the field, while Birkel added 13 and Plucker scored 10.
NDSU ends its season 13-16.
