Steen, Bison Capitalize in Seventh for Split With Centenary

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FARGO, N.D. - Tyler Steen hit a two-out double to score Zach Wentz from first after an infield error and North Dakota State beat Centenary 4-3 in the second game of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Saturday, April 30, at Newman Outdoor Field.

Steen's slicing line drive went under the glove of diving center fielder Pete Rajkovich and allowed Wentz to score without a play after his misplayed ground ball scored Nic Obey with the tying run after a leadoff pinch-hit triple.

It was Steen's second game-winning hit in three contests.  He hit a two-run homer off the left field foul pole in Friday's 6-5 victory.  The Bison (14-21, 10-5) have won their last five one-run games after losing the first nine.

Centenary (7-24, 4-11) came back from a 10-4 deficit in the opener and scored four runs in the top of the ninth to win 16-12.  Derek Dalzell pitched two shutout innings for the win and came back to throw all 6 2/3 innings of the nightcap.

NDSU broke open a 4-4 game in the opener with a six-run sixth inning that saw the Bison send 10 batters to the plate, but Centenary went ahead 11-10 with seven runs in the top of the seventh.

It was tied at 12 before the Gents batted around in the ninth.  Losing pitcher John Straka issued back-to-back walks to start the inning and Kyle Morton doubled on the third pitch he saw from reliever Jason Mattila to put the Gents ahead for good.

Both teams used five pitchers in the first game.  Centenary starter Seth Lugo allowed six runs on seven hits with five walks and five strikeouts in five innings.  NDSU's Mark Hermes allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

NDSU reliever Kyle Kingsley, who entered with the bases loaded in the fifth and threw one pitch to get an inning-ending double play, had his streak of 15 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings come to an end in the sixth when JoAnthony Cantu hit a leadoff double and scored two plays later on an infield ground ball.

Tim Colwell had three hits in the opener for NDSU and five other players had two hits apiece.  The Gents hit eight doubles in the game including two by Cantu, who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, and two by Morton, who finished 3-for-6 with four RBIs.

Wentz pitched all seven innings in the nightcap and upped his record to 2-5.  He allowed six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Steen and Max Casper each had two hits for NDSU and Mark Gillean was 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Centenary.

The Bison and Gents are scheduled to close out the four-game series with a single nine-inning game beginning at noon Sunday, May 1.
