FARGO, N.D.--Dani DeGagne came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points as North Dakota State University posted an 83-65 exhibition win over Minnesota State Moorhead in women's college basketball on Monday, Nov. 5, before 574 at the Bison Sports Arena.
North Dakota State is scheduled to open the regular season against Harvard University at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9. The Crimson return four starters off last year's 18-12 team that placed second in the Ivy League.
DeGagne scored 10 of her game-high total in the first half to provide a spark for the Bison, which trailed by 10 points early to Minnesota State Moorhead, members of the Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Dragons held the lead for most of the opening period as Megan Strese worked inside, and Marissa Yernatich and Kaycee Charette hit from the outside. Yernatich led MSUM with 12 points, while Strese added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Jamie Van Kirk hit a pair of free throws to put the Bison ahead for good at 31-29 with 4:53 remaining. Van Kirk added 13 points overall as NDSU held a 40-35 halftime advantage.
Freshmen forwards Holly Johnson and Marena Whittle helped North Dakota State gradually pull away in the second half. Johnson scored 15 points, while Whittle flirted with a double-double and finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Bison shot 54.5 percent from the field in the second half, directed by Katie Birkel and Kahla Becken, who combined for 12 assists and five steals. NDSU shot 46.5 percent overall compared to 37 percent for Minnesota State.
North Dakota State committed only six turnovers and scored 25 points off 17 MSUM. The Bison held a 42-39 edge on the glass.
