
Whittle's Rebound Bucket Finishes Bison Women Comeback Win Over IUPUI

FARGO, N.D.--Marena Whittle hit a rebound bucket and free throw with 4.2-seconds left to help North Dakota State University finish a 71-68 win over IUPUI in a Summit League women's basketball game played Thursday, Jan. 17, before 527 at the Bison Sports Arena.
Whittle, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Vermont South, Victoria Australia, hit the game-winning shot for the second straight contest. The Bison (7-11, 3-3 Summit League) have won three of their last four games.
Whittle finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds as NDSU had five different players reach double-figure scoring. It was Whittle's third double-double of the season and sixth double-figure rebound game of the season.
North Dakota State rallied from a 33-28 halftime deficit as IUPUI's Kerah Nelson dropped in 18 of her game-high 26 points in the first half.
The Jaguars led by nine, 44-35, with 14:40 remaining in the second half on a Nelson jumper.
However, the Bison went on a 25-6 run and led 60-50 with 5:43 left when Katie Birkel hit 1 of 2 free throws. Birkel finished with 16 points.
Jamie Van Kirk scored nine of her 11 points over that span to spark NDSU, while Dani DeGagne was solid across the board with 10 points, career-high six steals, six assists and six rebounds. Liz Keena had a career best three steals, hit all four field goal attempts and claimed 13 points.
IUPUI recovered and outscored North Dakota State 14-3 over next three minutes. DeAirra Goss gave the Jaguars a 64-63 lead with 2:41 remaining. Goss scored 13 points.
The score was tied three times after that before Whittle's dramatic finish.
North Dakota State shot 43.4 percent from the field and made 23 of 29 free throws for 79.3 percent to overcome 18 turnovers. The Bison outrebounded IUPUI 35-32. The Jaguars made 44.8 percent from the field and had 17 miscues.
