Wahlund’s Title Leads NDSU to Third Straight Summit League Cross Country Championship

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – North Dakota State sophomore Brecca Wahlund captured The Summit League women's cross country individual title on Saturday morning, leading a dominant Bison effort that resulted in a third-straight team championship.
NDSU won with 25 points – the fourth-best point total in Summit League Championships history and the best since Southern Utah won with 22 points in 2001. South Dakota State took second place with 47 points, and South Dakota was third with 66.
Wahlund's title is the first Summit League cross country individual crown won by a Bison woman. Her winning six-kilometer time of 21:24.22 on Saturday was the second-fastest time of her career and the sixth-fastest winning time in league history. The Minot, N.D., native was the runner-up at last year's conference meet as a freshman.
Each of the top five finishers for the Bison placed in the top nine overall. Senior Maddie McClellan was third in 21:48.01, redshirt freshman Erin Teschuk was fifth in 21:53.30, junior Abbi Aspengren was seventh in 21:55.63, and senior Heidi Peterson was ninth in 22:13.76. All five scorers finished within 50 seconds of each other.
Wahlund, McClellan, Teschuk and Aspengren earned first-team All-Summit League honors for their top-seven finishes. Peterson was named second-team All-Summit League after earning her fourth career top-10 finish at the conference meet.
NDSU head coach Ryun Godfrey was named the league's Coach of the Year for the third straight season, and Wahlund earned Championship MVP honors.
Since joining The Summit League for the 2007-08 season, NDSU women's cross country and track & field have now won 15 of a possible 19 team titles. The Bison are the third team in league history to win three or more consecutive women's cross country championships.
NDSU will run at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Ames, Iowa, on Friday, Nov. 15.
