NDSU WBB Opens Regular Season Against Comets
The North Dakota State women's basketball team will officially tip-off the 2013-14 regular season at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, inside the Bison Sports Arena against the Mayville State University Comets.
NDSU in Season Openers
The Bison are 29-19 overall in season openers. Last season, NDSU defeated Harvard in the opener inside the Bison Sports Arena, 81-72. The last time NDSU lost an opening game was Nov. 11, 2011 against Green Bay in Fargo, 82-59.
NDSU at Home
North Dakota State has compiled a 407-75 (.844) record at home, including a 104-36 mark inside the "Friendly Confines" over the past 10 seasons good for a .743 winning percentage. The Bison went 7-7 at home last season.
Bison Eighth in Summit League Preseason Poll
The North Dakota State women's basketball team was tabbed eighth in The Summit League preseason poll released Tuesday, Oct. 15 by the league office. The Bison received 74 points in the poll.
NDSU returns nine student-athletes from last season's team, including one starter in sophomore forward Marena Whittle. She started 26-of-29 games in 2012-13, averaging 6.7 points and 7.1 rebounds.
South Dakota State was picked to win the league after claiming its record fifth-consecutive Summit League tournament title and fourth regular season title in six years. The Jackrabbits collected 27-of-30 first-place votes and 319 points in the voting conducted by the league's head coaches, SIDs and media.
IUPUI was picked to finish runner-up in the poll, collecting three first-place votes and 276 points, after finishing second in the regular season a year ago. South Dakota was third with 224 points followed by Fort Wayne in fourth with 179. League newcomer Denver, Western Illinois, Omaha and the Bison rounded out the poll.
Fort Wayne's Amanda Hyde was voted as the league's preseason Player of the Year after garnering Player of the Year and first team All-Summit League honors last season.
Accompanying Hyde on the first team are IUPUI's DeAirra Goss, 2013 Newcomer of the Year Western Illinois' Ashley Luke, last season's Tournament MVP South Dakota's Nicole Seekamp, Denver's Morgan Van Riper-Rose and South Dakota State's Megan Waytashek.
The second team is composed of reigning Defensive Player of the Year in IUPUI's Dee-Dee Bellamy, South Dakota's Polly Harrington, Omaha's Ericka House, South Dakota State's Steph Paluch and Fort Wayne's Haley Seibert.
NDSU Women's Basketball to be Featured Twice on TV in 2013-14
The North Dakota State women's basketball team will be featured twice on television during the upcoming 2013-14 regular season, the NDSU athletic department announced Thursday, Oct. 10.
As part of NDSU's broadcast agreement with Hoak Media, the home games against Mississippi State Dec. 17 and South Dakota State Jan. 25 will be aired throughout the state of North Dakota on MeTV. The television network is available via over-the-air channels in Bismarck (5.2), Minot (10.2), Williston (8.2) and Dickinson (7.2) as well as through additional providers.
The DeHoff File
Carolyn DeHoff begins her sixth season as head women's basketball coach at North Dakota State University. She has compiled a 66-81 record overall including a 46-42 ledger in The Summit League.
The Bison finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 10-19 and were 6-10 in league play. Seniors Dani DeGagne and Katie Birkel were both named to the All-Summit League second team.
NDSU once again excelled in the classroom in 2013. The Bison placed 10th on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll in NCAA Division I and had eight student-athletes named to The Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence. Nine Bison were also selected to the Winter/Spring Summit League Academic Honor Roll.
DeHoff was introduced as North Dakota State University's ninth head women's basketball coach in the program's 48-year history at a press conference in April 2008.
DeHoff replaced Women's Basketball Hall of Fame coach Amy Ruley, who resigned in March 2008 to accept an associate athletic director for development position at North Dakota State.
DeHoff completed her first season as associate head coach in 2007-08 and fifth overall on Elaine Elliott's Utah staff. The Utes finished 27-5 overall and won the Mountain West Conference regular season championship with a 16-0 record. Utah lost in the first round of the 2008 NCAA tournament. Her duties at Utah included coordinating recruiting efforts, point guard development, organization and planning of the schedule, coordination of academic affairs and directing summer camps.
During her stay in Salt Lake City, the Utes won 123 games, three regular season conference championships and one MWC tournament title. Utah made three trips to the NCAA tournament including an Elite Eight berth in 2006 and a WNIT appearance in 2007. The Utes also had a pair of WNBA first round draft picks, along with second round pick in the 2008 draft.
Her 18-year coaching resume includes a five-year stop at Weber State. The Wildcats went from a sub-.500 program to a back-to-back NCAA tournament participant. Weber State won consecutive Big Sky titles and posted back-to-back 20 win seasons.
Prior to Weber State, DeHoff was the top assistant at Wyoming for seven seasons and also was an assistant coach at Coronado High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.
A standout high school player at Cheyenne (Wyo.) East, DeHoff was a Street & Smith's All-America her senior year. She played at Arizona State University from 1987-90, where she was a captain.
A native of Cheyenne, DeHoff graduated from Arizona State in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science and physical education. She was inducted into her high school athletic hall of fame during the fall of 2008.
Series History
Friday's contest against the Comets will be the 22nd meeting all-time. The Bison are a perfect 21-0 in the series that dates back to 1967. Last season, NDSU rolled to a 111-75 win over the Comets in Fargo.
The Opposing Coach
Dennis Hutter is in his eighth season at the helm of the Mayville State women's basketball program. He has a career record of 79-123 at Mayville. Hutter is a 2001 graduate of Bethel College.
Prior to Mayville State University, Hutter served as the assistant women's basketball coach at NCAA II Southwest Minnesota State University.
Scouting the Opponent
The Comets enter Friday's contest with an overall record of 3-0, recording wins over the CMU Blazers, University of Winnipeg and Brandon University. Mayville is ranked 22nd in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) preseason top-25 poll.
MSU is paced offensively by Marcisa McMillan and Liza Hoglo. McMillan is averaging 20.7 points and 12.3 rebounds per-game while Hoglo is averaging 20 points and 7.7 boards. McMillan has 13 blocks in three games for the Comets.
As a team, the Comets averaged 108 points and 52 rebounds in their first three games and held their opponents to just 64 points and 34.7 boards.
Bison Post Perfect 2-0 Record in Exhibition Play to Start Season
NDSU women's basketball started the 2013-14 season with a pair of exhibition victories over Minnesota-Crookston and Concordia-Moorhead.
In the 64-59 win against the Golden Eagles of Minnesota-Crookston, Oct. 30, the Bison used a strong second half to seal the victory. Holly Johnson led NDSU with a double-double, scoring 13 points and snagging 11 rebounds. Liz Keena also scored in double-figures for the Bison with 12 points. NDSU was 19-of-50 from the floor for 38-percent and out-rebounded Crookston, 49-24.
Saturday, Nov. 2, in NDSU's 85-56 victory over the Cobbers, the Bison led from start to finish in the game. Brooke LeMar paced the Bison, posting a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists. Marena Whittle scored 16 points for NDSU with 13 of those occurring in the second half. She was a blistering 4-of-5 from three in the contest. Johnson rounded out the Bison in double-figures, scoring 15 points. NDSU shot 33-of-67 from the field and were 8-of-19 from three. The Bison out-rebounded the Cobbers 45-36.
Quick Hits
- NDSU women's basketball shot 44-percent from the field in its two exhibition games, going 52-117.
- The Bison averaged 74.5 points and 47 rebounds per-game while holding their opponents to 57.5 points and 30 rebounds in the two exhibition contests.
- Three Bison players scored in double-figures in the opening exhibition contests. Holly Johnson averaged 14 points while Brooke LeMar averaged 12 points and Marena Whittle averaged 11.5 points.
- Johnson and Emily Spier led NDSU in rebounding in the pair of exhibition games. Johnson averaged 9.5 boards while Spier averaged 6.0.

NDSU women's basketball welcomes three incoming freshmen to this year's team along with redshirts Brittany Wiebe (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains HS) and Brooke LeMar (Canyon Country, Calif./Southern Illinois University). Newcomers include Hannah Breske (Casselton, N.D./Central Cass HS), Emily Spier (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Bree Whatman (Beaconsfield, Victoria/Rowville HS).

Friday's regular season opener against Mayville State will be broadcast live on KVOX 740-AM "The Fan" in Fargo-Moorhead. Scott Miller will provide play-by-play while NDSU Athletics Director of Sales and Broadcasting Jeremy Jorgenson will handle color commentary duties. Pregame gets underway at 4:40 p.m.
