NDSU Bats Come Alive for Doubleheader Sweep at Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - Kyle Kleinendorst hit two doubles, homered and drove in six runs as North Dakota State completed a doubleheader sweep with a 15-7 win over Omaha in Summit League baseball Saturday, April 27, at the Ballpark at Boys Town.

Wes Satzinger was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and John Skrbec went 2-for-3 with two RBIs including a bases-loaded walk in the seventh that provided the eventual winning run for NDSU in an 8-7 victory in the opener.

North Dakota State (17-16, 5-4 Summit) rapped out a season-high 17 hits in the second game.  The Bison scored on a wild pitch, bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Nick Altavilla to jump ahead 4-0 in the first inning.

Omaha (15-18, 9-2 Summit) closed within 5-4 in the fourth but NDSU extended the lead to 9-4 with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and a two-run double from Kleinendorst in the sixth.

NDSU led 9-7 in the eighth before Kleinendorst doubled in two more and scored on Blake Turbak's single for a 12-7 lead.  Omaha native Jon Hechtner doubled and scored on Satzinger's single in the ninth and Kleinendorst homered on the next play to close the scoring.

Jay Flaa pitched three innings in his first NDSU start in Game 2.  Adam Lambrecht pitched two innings of relief and was credited with the victory.  Simon Anderson tossed the final 3 1/3 innings for his third save of the season.

NDSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening game. Tim Colwell and Satzinger led off with back-to-back singles in the first and Colwell scored on Kleinendorst's one-out hit.  Satzinger added a two-run single in the second to plate Andy Wicklund and Skrbec.

Omaha went ahead with four runs in the third capped by Ryan Keele's two-run triple, but NDSU answreed with four runs in the sixth.

Altavilla led off with a double and pinch runner Mark Hermes scored on Skrbec's two-out single.  Hechtner drew a pinch-hit walk and scored on Colwell's single and Satzinger had a two-run single to make it 7-4.

Skrbec's bases-loaded walk made it 8-4 in the seventh before Cole Gruber's singled in two Omaha runs in the sixth and scored on Alex Schultz's hit to make it a one-run game.

NDSU starter David Ernst allowed four runs on eight hits in three innings, Parker Trewin (1-2) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win, and Kyle Kingsley tossed the final two innings for his fourth save.

The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
