FARGO, N.D. – A stellar defensive effort and a strike from sophomore forward Lauren Miller helped the North Dakota State University women's soccer team (6-6-2, 2-1-2 Summit League) to a 1-0 upset victory over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (7-6-1, 3-1-1 Summit League) on Friday evening, Oct. 17, at Dacotah Field.
The match was scoreless until Miller found the back of the net on a strike from distance in the 38th-minute, giving the Bison a 1-0 lead over the Jacks. The strike was Miller's team-high eighth of the season.
South Dakota State almost tallied an equalizer less than a minute later, in the 39th-minute, but Delaney Ratcliffe's shot was saved by Bison goalkeeper Sierra Bonham, keeping NDSU on top going into the 15-minute intermission.
The North Dakota State defense took over in the second-half and held the Jackrabbits scoreless the final 45-minutes to secure the 1-0 win.
NDSU was outshot by South Dakota State in the match, 10-5, and was held without a corner kick compared to four by the visitors.
Bonham posted a match-high four saves between the posts to pick up the victory and improve her record in goal to 6-6-2, while SDSU goalkeeper Elisa Stamatakis suffered the loss to fall to 5-3-1.
The Bison are scheduled to continue Summit League play on Sunday, Oct. 19, when they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., for a noon ET (11 a.m. CT) match against the IPFW Mastodons.
