Kelly, Espeland Pace Bison Men at UC Riverside Spring Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – North Dakota State junior Brett Kelly won the 3,000m steeplechase and senior Alec Espeland posted a personal-best 1500m time that ranks among the best in NDSU history as the Bison men's track & field team competed at the UC Riverside Spring Classic on Saturday, March 29.
Kelly claimed the 3,000m steeplechase title with a time of 9:18.22 to open his outdoor season. Sophomore Brendan Skime placed fifth in 9:41.10.
Bison senior Alec Espeland recorded a time of 3:50.18 in the 1500m to finish fifth on Saturday and rank eighth in school history in the event.
Senior Moses Heppner opened his final outdoor campaign by taking second in the 800m with a time of 1:52.70. Matt Jennings ran 1:55.57 for ninth place.
Sophomore Brock Larson and redshirt freshman Grant Mjelstad each cleared 15-07.75 (4.77m) to tie for fourth place in the pole vault. Larson also placed fifth in the javelin with a mark of 172-02 (52.48m).
Lucas DeGree finished seventh in the 3,000m run in 8:39.59.
NDSU freshman Jonah Warwick was 14th in the 400m dash, crossing the line in 49.77.
The Bison will compete next at the Stanford Invitational on Apr. 4-5.
