NDSU Women's Basketball Opens Summit League Tournament Against IUPUI
NDSU women's basketball will face IUPUI in the opening round of The Summit League basketball tournament Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D., from the Sioux Falls Arena. The Bison are the seven seed while IUPUI is the two seed in the tournament.
NDSU will be out to snap a seven game slide when it opens play in Sioux Falls Arena Saturday. The Bison's last victory occurred Feb. 1 against Denver.
The Series Against IUPUI
NDSU's Summit League tournament quarterfinal match-up against IUPUI Saturday will be the 16th meeting in the all-time series and third encounter this season. The Bison lead the series, 8-7, but have lost both contests to the Jaguars this season. NDSU fell to IUPUI at home Jan. 11, 71-46, and in Indianapolis Feb. 6, 77-53.
About the Jaguars
IUPUI enters The Summit League tournament will an overall record of 21-8 and are ranked 24th in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major top-25 poll. The Jaguars finished second in league play, posting a record of 11-3, and are the two seed in the tournament.
The Jags are led by two players averaging double figures. DeAirra Goss leads the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game (ppg.) and has 35 steals. Nevena Markovic averages 10.8 ppg for IUPUI and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game (rpg.).
As a team, IUPUI is averaging 71.6 ppg while limiting its opponents to a league-low 60.8 per game. The Jags are out-rebounding their opponents, on average, 37.6 to 30.7.
NDSU in The Summit League Tournament
The Bison have an all-time record of 1-5 in Summit League tournament competition. NDSU has lost its last five contests in Sioux Falls. The lone Bison win in the league tournament occurred in 2008-09 when NDSU defeated Western Illinois in the quarterfinals, 46-43.
NDSU is 0-1 all-time against IUPUI in The Summit League tournament, falling to the Jaguars in the 2011-12 quarterfinals, 80-64.
Last Time Out: Hot Shooting Denver Defeats Bison Women in Regular Season Finale, 87-74
The Denver Pioneers (7-22, 5-9 Summit) shot a blistering 62 percent from the field helping them to an 87-74 win over the NDSU women's basketball team (6-23, 2-12 Summit) Saturday, March 1, inside Magness Arena in the 2013-14 regular season finale for both teams.
Holly Johnson paced NDSU with 19 points while Marena Whittle tallied 17 and Kahla Becken scored 13. Brooke LeMar posted a double-double for the Bison, netting 12 points while dishing out 11 assists.
Denver was led by Kailey Edwards with a game-high 24 points.
The Bison went 29-for-69 from the field for 42 percent and were 6-for-17 from three-point range for 35 percent. NDSU was 10-of-11 from the free throw line for 91 percent.
Denver went 34-for-55 from the field and were 6-for-14 (43 percent) from beyond the arc.
NDSU jumped out to an early 27-22 lead in the first half after a Whittle jumper with 10:26 on the clock in the opening stanza, but Denver came charging back, utilizing a 6-0 run to gain a 28-27 advantage with 6:50 remaining. The Bison briefly regained a 29-28 lead when Liz Keena converted a layup a little over a minute later, but the Pioneers responded, using an 8-0 spurt to open a 36-29 lead with 4:18 to go in the half. Denver went into halftime leading 41-34.
Whittle led the Bison in the first half with nine points while Johnson and Becken each had eight.
The Pioneers shot an impressive 56 percent in the opening stanza, going 18-for-32, while the Bison were only able to convert 13 of 34 shot attempts for 38 percent.
Last Time Against IUPUI: Bison Women Use Strong Second Half to Down Denver, 85-79
A late first-half run by IUPUI (17-6, 7-1 Summit) was too much for the NDSU women's basketball team (6-17, 2-6 Summit) to overcome, as they fell to the Jaguars Thursday night, Feb. 6, inside "The Jungle," 77-53, in Summit League action.
Holly Johnson led the Bison with 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting in the contest. Brooke LeMar also reached double digits for the Bison, tallying 12 points.
DeAirra Goss paced the Jaguars, also scoring 20 points.
The Bison went 3-for-4 from the field the opening 3:24 of the first-half to jump out to an 8-0 lead over IUPUI and led by as much as a dozen, 14-2, after a made three-pointer from Johnson with 15:34 to go. The Bison couldn't hold the lead though, as IUPUI used a 12-4 run from 11:33 to 7:14 to gain its first lead of the game, 24-22, after a made layup from Akilah Sims. The Bison regained a 25-24 lead less than a minute later after Bree Whatman converted a layup, was fouled and made the bonus free throw, but, the Jaguars answered, using another 12-4 run to regain the lead going into halftime, 36-29.
IUPUI scored 16 points off 12 Bison turnovers in the opening stanza and pulled down 20 rebounds, nine offensive, compared to just 13 for NDSU.
The Jaguars controlled the second half, outscoring the Bison 21-9 the opening nine minutes of the half to take a commanding 57-38 lead, a lead they held to remainder of the contest to pick-up their seventh straight victory.
NDSU shot 20-for-54 from the field for 37 percent and 6-for-16 from beyond the arc for 38 percent in the game. The Bison made 7-of-9 free throw attempts for 78 percent.
IUPUI forced the Bison into a season-high 21 turnovers in the game, leading to 26 Jaguar points.
The Bison were out-rebounded in the contest by the Jags, 38-29, including a 15-12 advantage for the home team on the offensive glass.
The Last Time Against IUPUI in The Summit League Tournament: IUPUI Defeats Bison Women 80-64 in Summit League Tournament Opener
IUPUI outscored North Dakota State 17-5 over the last five minutes of the first half to open a 42-30 lead and then went on to defeat the Bison 80-64 in the opening round of the 2012 Summit League women's basketball tournament Sunday at the Sioux Falls Arena.
The victory puts No. 5 seed IUPUI, 13-18, in Monday's noon semifinal game against top-seeded South Dakota State.
After building the halftime lead, IUPUI shot 56 percent (13-for-23) in the second half while the Bison, who ended their season 11-20, shot just 22 percent (8-for-36).
Despite the shooting woes, the Bison closed within eight at 56-48 on a layup by Janae Burich with 9:11 to play. But a 12-2 IUPUI run, capped by a pair of free throws from Nevena Markovic, pushed the Jaguar lead back to 66-49. The margin increased to 21 when Kerah Nelson hit a free throw with 3:17 to go, making it 74-53.
Emily Phillips led four IUPUI players in double figures with 17 points while Dawn Luster had 16, Markovic 15 and Katie Comello contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Dani DeGagne led NDSU with 18 points while Hannah Linz had 17 and Burich contributed a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
For the game, IUPUI outshot NDSU 46.7 percent (28-for-60) to 29 percent (20-for-69) and had a 44-42 rebounding advantage. Nelson led IUPUI with 10 boards.
LeMar Named Second Team All-Summit League, Newcomer of the Year
Brooke LeMar was selected to the All-Summit League second team, the All-Newcomer team and was tabbed the league's Newcomer of the Year for her performance throughout the 2013-14 regular season, the league announced Thursday afternoon.
LeMar, the first-ever NDSU women's basketball student-athlete to be named Newcomer of the Year, averages a team-high 15.1 points and 5.3 assists per game. She ranks second in The Summit League in assists, third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5) and fifth in the league in total scoring.
Missed Opportunities
NDSU is shooting 74.8 percent from the free throw line this season, second-best in The Summit League. The Bison rank 28th out of 343 NCAA Division I women's basketball programs in free-throw percentage. However, the Bison have only been able to get to the line 421 times compared to 712 trips for their opponents. NDSU has been outscored at the foul line this season, 519-315, including a 277-137 deficit in league play.
The Summit Scoring Blues
NDSU struggled shooting the basketball in Summit League play this season, making only 352 shots out of 936 attempts for 37.6 percent. The Bison were just 76-for-263 (28.9 percent) from three in league play.
NDSU's opponents shot 45 percent (370-822) from the field and 31.1 percent from beyond the arc in league play, going 65 of 209.
30+ Scoring Performances
Holly Johnson and Marena Whittle's 31-point performance at South Dakota Feb. 27 marked the fourth game this season at least one NDSU player eclipsed 30 points. Previous 30+ point performances this season for the Bison included Johnson (31 pts. vs. Wyoming, Dec. 7), Whittle (33 pts. vs. Fort Wayne, Jan. 9), and Brooke LeMar (33 pts. vs. Denver, Feb. 1).
Exceeding the 20 Point Threshold
Brooke LeMar has scored at least 20 points in nine of NDSU's 29 games this season. She scored 24 against Northern Iowa Nov. 20, 25 at Milwaukee Nov. 23, 21 versus Montana Nov. 29 in the DoubleTree LA Westside Thanksgiving Classic, 21 against SEC foe Mississippi State Dec. 17, 25 against Northern Colorado Jan. 2, 21 against Western Illinois and Valley City State Jan. 18 and 22, 20 against South Dakota State Jan. 25 and a career-best 33 against Denver Feb. 1.
Distributing the Ball
Brooke LeMar leads the Bison and is second in The Summit League in assists, tallying 153 in 29 games. She averages an impressive 5.3 assists per game and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.5 (153 assists to 100 turnovers). LeMar dished out at least four assists in 11 of NDSU's 14 league games.
Standing Tall
NDSU has four players with double digit blocked shots through 29 games, led by Marena Whittle with 27 blocks. Miki Stephenson is second with 20 while Holly Johnson and Emily Spier round out the Bison with double figure blocks with 12 and 11, respectively. As a team, the Bison are averaging 3.3 blocks per game.

The Bison have seven players with at least 12 steals through 29 games, led by Marena Whittle with 32 steals. Brooke LeMar is second with 29 while Kahla Becken is third with 24. Bison women's basketball has been exceptional at taking care of the basketball and are among the national leaders in fewest turnovers per game. Carolyn DeHoff Resigns as North Dakota State Women's Basketball Coach, Effective April 15
North Dakota State University director of women's athletics Lynn Dorn announced Thursday, Feb. 20 head women's basketball coach Carolyn DeHoff has resigned effective April 15.
DeHoff is in her sixth year at NDSU.
DeHoff came to NDSU prior to the 2008-09 season after coaching at the University of Utah (2003-08), Weber State University (1998-03), the University of Wyoming (1991-98) and Coronado High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. (1990-91).
A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., DeHoff was a standout high school player at Cheyenne East and played at Arizona State University from 1987-90, where she was a team captain.
The DeHoff File
Carolyn DeHoff is in her sixth season as head women's basketball coach at North Dakota State University. She has compiled a 72-104 record overall including a 48-50 ledger in The Summit League.
The Bison finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 10-19 and were 6-10 in league play. Seniors Dani DeGagne and Katie Birkel were both named to the All-Summit League second team.
NDSU once again excelled in the classroom in 2013. The Bison placed 10th on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll in NCAA Division I and had eight student-athletes named to The Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence. Nine Bison were also selected to the Winter/Spring Summit League Academic Honor Roll.
DeHoff was introduced as North Dakota State University's ninth head women's basketball coach in the program's 48-year history at a press conference in April 2008.
DeHoff replaced Women's Basketball Hall of Fame coach Amy Ruley, who resigned in March 2008 to accept an associate athletic director for development position at North Dakota State.
DeHoff completed her first season as associate head coach in 2007-08 and fifth overall on Elaine Elliott's Utah staff. The Utes finished 27-5 overall and won the Mountain West Conference regular season championship with a 16-0 record. Utah lost in the first round of the 2008 NCAA tournament. Her duties at Utah included coordinating recruiting efforts, point guard development, organization and planning of the schedule, coordination of academic affairs and directing summer camps.
During her stay in Salt Lake City, the Utes won 123 games, three regular season conference championships and one MWC tournament title. Utah made three trips to the NCAA tournament including an Elite Eight berth in 2006 and a WNIT appearance in 2007. The Utes also had a pair of WNBA first round draft picks, along with second round pick in the 2008 draft.
Her 18-year coaching resume includes a five-year stop at Weber State. The Wildcats went from a sub-.500 program to a back-to-back NCAA tournament participant. Weber State won consecutive Big Sky titles and posted back-to-back 20 win seasons.
Prior to Weber State, DeHoff was the top assistant at Wyoming for seven seasons and also was an assistant coach at Coronado High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.
A standout high school player at Cheyenne (Wyo.) East, DeHoff was a Street & Smith's All-America her senior year. She played at Arizona State University from 1987-90, where she was a captain.
A native of Cheyenne, DeHoff graduated from Arizona State in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science and physical education. She was inducted into her high school athletic hall of fame during the fall of 2008.
