SACRAMENTO, Calif. – North Dakota State University alum and current Bison volunteer assistant coach Riley Dolezal held the lead in the javelin through four of the six attempts, but he ultimately settled for a runner-up finish at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, June 29.
The defending USA champion, Dolezal opened the competition with the second-best throw of his career at 260-1 (79.27m), holding the lead until the fifth of six attempts. Sean Furey unleashed a throw of 266-1 (81.10m) to win the American title in the fifth round, leaving a runner-up finish for Dolezal after he was unable to surpass Furey with his final two attempts.
Dolezal's throw of 273-11 (83.50m) to win the USA championship in 2013 is the only time he's thrown further than his best mark on Sunday. He entered last year's meet ranked 14th among the javelin competitors before shocking the field with four straight lifetime-best throws. Dolezal is coached by NDSU assistant Justin St. Clair.
Former Bison Shawn Francis competed in the pole vault, but was one of five men unable to clear the opening height of 17-08.50 (5.40m).
Both Dolezal and Francis competed for NDSU from 2005-09.
