CHARLESTON, S.C. - North Dakota State's John Crockett was named to the 2014 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) watch list for all-purpose backs announced Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Crockett, a senior from Minneapolis, Minn., ranked fifth in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with 106.6 all-purpose yards per game last season. He was NDSU's primary kick returner the second half of the season and averaged 26.2 yards over 11 kickoff returns including a career-long of 52 yards against Illinois State.
Crockett has charted back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in his first two years at North Dakota State. He ran for 1,277 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 6.7 yards per carry in 15 games last year. He led the Bison with 1,599 all-purpose yards including six pass receptions for 34 yards.
Crockett is also on the CFPA Running Back Watch List. He joins free safety and punt returner Christian Dudzik, punter Ben LeCompte, placekicker Adam Keller, tight end Kevin Vaadeland, wide receiver Zach Vraa, running back John Crockett, strong safety Colten Heagle, defensive end Kyle Emanuel and linebacker Carlton Littlejohn on the watch list.
The initial watch list includes 30 returning players, vying for the top all-purpose award in the Football Championship Subdivision. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.
Two former NDSU stars have earned CFPA honors: John Prelvitz (CFPA Punter Award) and Marcus Williams (CFPA Defensive Back Award).
The goal of College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. Twenty-eight CFPA winners have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
CFPA is in its seventh year of recognition, utilizing player and team performance rankings, broken down by offense, defense, and special teams. According to the CFPA's data, NDSU was the highest performing team in each of its FCS title seasons.
Last season, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston earned the CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy for the FBS, while Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams earned the CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy.
CFPA Trophy winner and former South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was the first overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.
The full list of 2014 CFPA winners will be announced January 14, 2015.
