Host Omaha Rides Momentum to Push Past NDSU 3-1 for Summit League Win

FARGO, N.D. —Michaela Schimmer connected for a match-high 17 kills and had five blocks to lead host University of Nebraska at Omaha to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-12) win over North Dakota State University in a Summit League match played Friday, Oct. 23, at Sapp Fieldhouse Fieldhouse. The Mavericks sweep the season series.
NDSU (14-10, 5-5 Summit League) is scheduled to travel to Western Illinois (3-20, 1-7 SL) for a 1 p.m. match Sunday, Oct. 25. Western Illinois played at IUPUI on Friday.
Jenni Fassbender connected for five of her team-high 11 kills as North Dakota State scored five of the last six points to secure a win in the first set. Fassbender has recorded double-figure kills in 20 of 24 matches this season and 64 in her career. She finished with 13 digs.
After dropping the first set, Omaha (11-11, 6-3 SL) stormed out of the gates in the second, connecting for 16 kills and only two errors in 32 attacks for a .438 hitting percentage.
The Mavericks jumped out to leads of 10-3 and 20-10 in the third set, but the Bison battled back to close within 24-22 behind Jessica Jorgensen, Emily Minnick, Emily Miron and Fassbender. Megan Schmale's kill ended the third and put Omaha ahead 2-1 in the match.
Omaha came out firing in the fourth set, hitting .359 and rolling to the deciding set win. The Mavericks outhit NDSU .261 to .146 in the match led Schimmer's 17, and the 13 kills from Mackenzie Horkey and 10 from Amy Taylor.
Omaha held a 7-3 edge in team blocks. Taylor had four blocks and Schmale added three behind Schimmer's five. Kimberly Bailey had match-high 23 digs, while Sydney O'Schaughnessy contributed 45 assists, 21 digs and five aces.
Mikaela Purnell finished with 22 digs for NDSU. Purnell has recorded 20-plus digs in five of the last seven matches and seven on the season. Brianna Rasmusson came up with 21 assists, 14 digs and five kills to notch her ninth double-double of the season.
