NDSU Explodes Past Western Illinois for 3-0 Summit League Road Win

MACOMB, Ill.--North Dakota State University connected for a season-high .400 hitting percentage to explode past host Western Illinois University 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-17) in a Summit League match played Sunday, Oct. 25 before 147 spectators at Western Hall. The Bison sweep the season series.
NDSU (15-10, 6-5 Summit League) concludes a three-game road trip at South Dakota (10-12, 4-5 SL) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 in Vermillion. The Bison are currently in fifth place in the league standings and USD is sixth.
Jenni Fassbender recorded six of her match-high 11 kills and Emily Minnick had four of her five blocks in the first set against Western Illinois (3-22, 1-9 SL). The opening set was tied six times, the last at 11-11 before the Bison went on a 6-1 run to break things open on kills from a pair of kills from Fassbender, another from Brianna Rasmusson and service ace by Mikaela Purnell.
Fassbender had 11 kills and one error in 22 attacks to hit .455, while Jessica Jorgensen followed with eight kills and one error in 12 attacks to hit .583. Monica Claxton and Rasmusson combined for 35 assists as the Bison hit .520 in set two and .400 in set three with only four errors in 55 attacks. Fassbender has recorded double-figure kills in 21 of 25 matches this season and 65 in her career.
Purnell served up a career-high four aces against Western Illinois, while Morgan Samec snapped off a pair. Purnell also paced the defense with a match-high 13 digs.
Shiah Sanders had six kills for Western Illinois, while Kaili Simmons came up with 11 digs. Jordan Jackson finished with a pair of blocks and Morgyn Bullock added 15 assists.
