Balance Carries NDSU Volleyball to 3-0 Summit League Road Win at Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Jenni Fassbender delivered a match-high 14 kills and hit .423 as North Dakota State University defeated Fort Wayne 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19) in a Summit League match played Friday, Oct. 9, before 417 spectators on Arnie Ball Court in the Gates Sports Center.
NDSU (12-7, 3-3 Summit League) is scheduled to play at IUPUI (13-6, 4-1 SL) at 4 p.m. Central on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Indianapolis. The Jaguars defeated South Dakota State 3-0 on Friday.
Fassbender, a 5-foot-11 senior from Kaukuana, Wis., recorded six of her match-high 14 kills in the first set as North Dakota State fell behind early but rallied to take the lead for good at 6-5 on a blast from Fassbender. Fassbender pushed her career total to 1,195 and moved to 17th all-time past Chrystal Olson (1,187, 1994-97).
It was a balanced NDSU offense directed by Monica Claxton and Brianna Rasmusson, who combined for 39 assists. Emily Minnick, Emily Miron and Rasmusson each finished seven kills. Miron hit. 500 (7-1-12), Rasmusson .429 (7-1-14) and Minnick .312 (7-2-14). The Bison outhit the Mastodons .320 to .106 overall and achieve a .300-plus hitting percentage for the sixth time this season.
Mikaela Purnell led NDSU with match-high 23 kills, one shy of her career best of 24. It was Purnell's second straight match with 20-plus digs and fourth of the season. The Bison also had seven team blocks led by three apiece from Minnick and Miron.
Fort Wayne (4-16, 1-4 SL) was led by Somer Johnson's 11 kills, while Olivia Hahn came up with 16 digs and Natalie Seiler had four blocks.
