Fassbender Cracks Career-High 25 Kills as NDSU Holds Off South Dakota State 3-2

BROOKINGS, S.D.—Jenni Fassbender connected for a career-high 25 kills as North Dakota State University held off host South Dakota State University 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 15-12) in a Summit League match played Friday, Nov. 13, in Frost Arena. The Bison improved to 5-2 in five-set matches this season.
NDSU (18-11, 9-6 Summit League) is scheduled to close out the regular season with another 2 p.m. match Sunday, Nov. 15, at Oral Roberts University (14-13, 8-6 SL).
North Dakota State led 10-8 in the fifth set on an Emily Minnick and Fassbender block, and again at 11-9 on Hadley Steffen's kill. However, South Dakota State (4-27, 3-12 SL) came back to tie the fifth set at 11-11 and 12-12 on a Wagner Larson attack.
The Bison took the lead for good at 13-12 on a Jessica Jorgensen kill, took advantage of a SDSU attack error and close out the fifth set and match on Fassbender's deposit of a Brianna Rasmusson set. Fassbender finished the match hitting .367 with eight digs, four service aces and one block.
Fassbender, a 5-foot-11 senior from Kaukauna, Wis., reached 20 kills for the second time this season and seventh time in her career. Coincidentally, her previous best was 23 against South Dakota State on Sept. 28, 2013. She reach double-figure kills for the 25th time this season and 69th in her career.
North Dakota State outhit SDSU .271 to .254 in the match. Emily Miron and Minnick each finished with 10 kills, while Steffen added nine. Minnick led the Bison with three blocks.
Rasmusson was all over the court for NDSU. She came up with a career-high 23 digs and had 33 assists to record her team-leading 12th 'double-double' of the season. Rasmusson added five kills, a pair of blocks and one ace.
Four NDSU players reached double-figure digs. Morgan Samec claimed a career-high 14 digs, Monica Claxton had 22 assists and 13 digs, and Mikaela Purnell had 10 digs.
Mikala Hora topped South Dakota State with 16 kills, while Ashley Beaner and Larson each had 14. Mattison Munger collected 49 assists and 11 digs, while Lizzie Palmer had 20 digs and three aces.
