NDSU Women Battle League Leader South Dakota Sunday in Katherine Burgum Classic
The NDSU women's basketball team (9-13, 5-5 Summit League) will look to end a three-game losing streak when it battles Summit League leader South Dakota (18-5, 8-2 Summit League) on Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse in the ninth annual Katherine Burgum Classic.
The Series Against South Dakota
Sunday's game against the Coyotes will be the 64th meeting in the all-time series. NDSU leads the series, 41-22, but has dropped the past four meetings, including an 84-69 setback in Vermillion, S.D., earlier this season. The Bison's last win over South Dakota was a 57-50 victory at USD. The last home win for NDSU over South Dakota was a 64-50 triumph during the 2011-12 season.

In a game that featured 12 lead changes and five ties, the North Dakota State women's basketball team (9-13, 5-5 Summit League) came up short, falling 66-60 to the Western Illinois Leathernecks (15-8, 7-3 Summit League) on Friday, Feb. 6, at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
Three Bison reached double figures in the contest, paced by Brooke LeMar, who led all scorers with 25 points, while Taylor Thunstedt tallied 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Liz Keena rounded out the double-figure scoring for NDSU, tallying her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Holly Johnson also snagged 14 boards for North Dakota State, matching her career-best.

The North Dakota State University women's basketball team (7-10, 3-2 Summit League) dropped an 84-69 decision to the South Dakota Coyotes (13-4, 3-1 Summit League) on Thursday evening, Jan. 15, inside the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
Brooke LeMar, who surpassed 1,000 career points in the game, paced the Bison with a game-high 23 points, and Holly Johnson tallied her second-straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kahla Becken rounded out the Bison in double figures, tallying 13 points. Becken also went a team-best 8-for-9 from the free-throw line, matching her career-high for free-throws made, and snagged six rebounds to go along with four assists.
North Dakota State shot 37 percent from the field in the game, going 25-for-67, and were 5-for-19 from beyond-the-arc for 26 percent. The Bison were 14-for-18 from the free-throw line for 78 percent.
Raeshel Contreras led six Coyotes in double figures with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting.

Preseason Honors
Senior guard Brooke LeMar, the reigning Summit League Newcomer of the Year and a second team all-league selection in 2013-14, was named to the preseason Summit League first team after averaging 15.1 points and 5.3 assists per game last season.
Head Coach Maren Walseth
Maren Walseth was named the 10th head women's basketball coach in NDSU history Monday, April 14, 2014.
Walseth joined the Bison after spending seven years as an assistant coach at Big Ten power Penn State University in State College, Pa., where she helped the Lady Lions to three Big Ten championships, four NCAA tournament appearances and two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances.
Prior to becoming an assistant at Penn State, Walseth spent three years as an assistant coach at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
A native of Bloomington, Minn., Walseth was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree as a forward at Penn State from 1997-2002. She was also a key member of the 2000 Lady Lion team that advanced to the Final Four and claimed the Big Ten conference championship. Walseth also was a member of the 1998 WNIT championship team. She graduated from Penn State in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in communications.
Walseth was drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs in the third-round of the 2001 WNBA draft and spent four years playing professionally. She played for the Washington Mystics of the WNBA in 2002 before spending two years playing professionally in France. Walseth also spent a season with the Women's National Basketball League's (NWBL) Colorado Chill.
Walseth's sister, Annika, played for NDSU during the 2007-08 season.

Last Time Out Against South Dakota: NDSU Women's Basketball Drops Game at South Dakota Thursday, 84-69
The North Dakota State University women's basketball team (7-10, 3-2 Summit League) dropped an 84-69 decision to the South Dakota Coyotes (13-4, 3-1 Summit League) on Thursday evening, Jan. 15, inside the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
Brooke LeMar, who surpassed 1,000 career points in the game, paced the Bison with a game-high 23 points, and Holly Johnson tallied her second-straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kahla Becken rounded out the Bison in double figures, tallying 13 points. Becken also went a team-best 8-for-9 from the free-throw line, matching her career-high for free-throws made, and snagged six rebounds to go along with four assists.
North Dakota State shot 37 percent from the field in the game, going 25-for-67, and were 5-for-19 from beyond-the-arc for 26 percent. The Bison were 14-for-18 from the free-throw line for 78 percent.
Raeshel Contreras led six Coyotes in double figures with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting.
South Dakota went 34-for-70 from the field in the contest for 49 percent and 6-for-19 from three for 32 percent. The Coyotes shot 83 percent from the foul line, going 10-of-12.
USD outrebounded NDSU, 44-35, and outscored the Bison in the paint, 40-26.

Preseason Honors
Senior guard Brooke LeMar, the reigning Summit League Newcomer of the Year and a second team all-league selection in 2013-14, was named to the preseason Summit League first team after averaging 15.1 points and 5.3 assists per game last season.
Head Coach Maren Walseth
Maren Walseth was named the 10th head women's basketball coach in NDSU history Monday, April 14, 2014.
Walseth joined the Bison after spending seven years as an assistant coach at Big Ten power Penn State University in State College, Pa., where she helped the Lady Lions to three Big Ten championships, four NCAA tournament appearances and two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances.
Prior to becoming an assistant at Penn State, Walseth spent three years as an assistant coach at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
A native of Bloomington, Minn., Walseth was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree as a forward at Penn State from 1997-2002. She was also a key member of the 2000 Lady Lion team that advanced to the Final Four and claimed the Big Ten conference championship. Walseth also was a member of the 1998 WNIT championship team. She graduated from Penn State in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in communications.
Walseth was drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs in the third-round of the 2001 WNBA draft and spent four years playing professionally. She played for the Washington Mystics of the WNBA in 2002 before spending two years playing professionally in France. Walseth also spent a season with the Women's National Basketball League's (NWBL) Colorado Chill.
Walseth's sister, Annika, played for NDSU during the 2007-08 season.

The Bison travel to Tulsa, Okla., for a midweek Summit League contest at Oral Roberts on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Tip-off from the Mabee Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
