NDSU Baseball Earns DH Split at Oral Roberts Saturday to Open Summit League Play

TULSA, Okla. – The North Dakota State baseball team (5-10, 1-1 Summit League) earned a doubleheader split at Oral Roberts (8-8, 1-1 Summit League) to open Summit League play on Saturday, March 14, at J.L. Johnson Stadium, falling in game one, 6-0, before winning the second game, 4-3.

The Bison and Golden Eagles are scheduled to play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday, March 15, at 1 p.m.

The 4-3 victory in the second game marked the first win over Oral Roberts since the 2012 season, snapping a two-game skid.

Trailing 3-0 entering the top of the fifth inning, NDSU's Juan Gamez connected on a 0-2 pitch, sending a ball over the left field fence to get the Bison on the board. It was Gamez's team-high third homer of the season. After Drew Fearing reached on an Oral Roberts error and advanced to third base, Paul Funk delivered a single through the right side, scoring Fearing to trim the Bison deficit to 3-2. Mason Pierzchalski delivered a two-out single to get on base, before Brayden Resch stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homer to right field on a 3-1 pitch to give North Dakota State its first lead of the day, 4-3. It was Resch's first round-tripper of the season.

The NDSU pitching staff took over the remaining four innings, holding the Golden Eagles scoreless to help seal to win.

Funk and Ben Petersen each collected two hits in the game for the Bison.

Right-hander Brian VanderWoude (1-1) picked up the victory on the bump for North Dakota State, striking out one and allowing just one earned run in 1.2 innings pitched. RHP Jay Flaa earned the save (2) after striking out three and allowing no earned runs in 3.2 innings.

In the first contest of the day, Fearing, Petersen and Jayse McClean collected the only three hits of the game for the Bison.

David Ernst (1-4) took the loss on the mound for the Bison after allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Oral Roberts jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Matt Whatley homered down the left field line.

The Golden Eagles added two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to secure the 6-0 win.
