Parker Breaks NDSU Javelin Record, Posts Nation’s No. 4 Mark in 2015 Opener

TEMPE, Ariz. – North Dakota State junior Tyler Parker wasted no time getting his 2015 outdoor season started on Saturday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State. Parker registered a school-record throw of 235-0 (71.62m) in the javelin to rank No. 4 in the NCAA this season.
The Hazen, N.D., native broke Riley Dolezal's school record of 228-10 from 2009. Dolezal went on to capture the USA championship in the javelin in 2013.
Three of the nation's top four javelin marks this season came from the Baldy Castillo Invitational on Saturday. Parker placed third in the meet behind NCAA leader Ioannis Kyriazis of Texas A&M, who threw 245-10 (74.94m).
Sophomore transfer Matti Mortimore threw 212-4 (64.71m) in the javelin in his NDSU debut, ranking him among the top 20 performers in the nation this season and No. 8 all-time at NDSU in the event.
Bison freshman Payton Otterdahl recorded an outstanding performance in his first outdoor meet. He posted a mark of 56-10.25 (17.33m) in the shot put to tie for second in NDSU history. Earlier in the day, Otterdahl threw 163-3 (49.77m) in his collegiate discus debut to stand at 10th all-time for the Bison.
NDSU sophomore Alex Renner uncorked a toss of 57-02.75 (17.44m) in the shot put – just three inches shy of matching his outdoor school record.
Freshman Landon Jochim clocked times of 22.02 in the 200m dash and 49.06 in the 400m dash, making him the top Bison finisher in both events. Redshirt freshman Aron Klos placed fifth in a tough 400m hurdles field with a strong season-opening time of 53.85.
Bison freshman Daniel Asa nearly hit 23 feet in his first outdoor long jump event of the year. The West Fargo native cleared 22-11.75 (7.00m) for eighth place.
