NDSU Wins Game One of DH at Northern Colorado Saturday, 4-2; Second Game Suspended

GREELEY Colo. – The North Dakota State baseball team (2-9) claimed a 4-2 win over the Northern Colorado Bears (2-4) in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7, at Jackson Field. The second game of the twin bill was suspended with the Bison leading Northern Colorado in the bottom of the eighth, 12-11. It will resume Sunday, March 8, at noon MT (1 p.m. CT).

The final contest of the four-game series scheduled for Sunday will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended contest.

Juan Gamez led the Bison at the plate in game one, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, while Mason Pierzchalski, John Skrbec and Paul Funk each drove in a run.

LHP Parker Trewin (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Bison. The Ramsey, Minn., native threw the first complete game of the season for NDSU, striking out eight batters while allowing just two earned runs on five hits in seven innings.

The Bison jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jon Hechtner crossed home plate on a Northern Colorado wild pitch in the top of the third inning.

NDSU increased its advantage to 3-0 in the top of the sixth. Pierzchalski led off the frame with a solo home run to left field. It was his first homer of the season and the first of his collegiate career. Skrbec drove in the second run of the inning on a RBI single.

The Bears cut the Bison lead to 3-2 in the bottom-half of the frame after Brandon Vaughan smacked a two-run home run to left field.

North Dakota State answered in the top of the seventh, though, plating a run on back-to-back doubles from Gamez and Funk to push its lead to 4-2. Trewin sealed the win for the Bison after pitching a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.
