Home Runs Help South Dakota State Defeat NDSU Baseball Sunday, 13-5

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State Jackrabbits (20-13, 9-6 Summit League) hit four home runs, helping them defeat the North Dakota State University baseball team (8-21, 3-12 Summit League), 13-5, and sweep a three-game Summit League series on Sunday, April 12, at Erv Huether Field.

JD Larimer led the Bison at the plate, going 2-for-4, while Paul Funk went 1-for-3 and recorded a double and three RBI. Ben Petersen and Taylor Sanders also each tallied a hit and RBI in the game.

NDSU southpaw Trent Keefer (3-4) took the loss on the mound after giving up five earned runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking one in three innings of work.

The Jackrabbits scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single and fielder's choice to gain an early 2-0 lead over the Bison.

SDSU increased its lead to 3-0 in the second frame after Cody Sharrow hit a solo home run left field.

The Bison got on the board and pulled within 3-2 of the SDSU lead on a RBI double to right center from Petersen and a RBI single from Sanders, but South Dakota State's Matthew Johnson and Newt Johnson hit back-to-back solo homers in the bottom-half of the inning to build the Jackrabbit lead to 5-2.

SDSU added one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to increase its advantage to 8-2.

NDSU cut the lead to 8-5 with three runs in the seventh on Funk's bases-clearing three RBI double to right center, but South Dakota State plated five runs in the bottom-half of the inning to build its lead to 13-5.

Reid Clary led SDSU at the plate, going 2-for-6 with a homer and three runs batted in.

Ryan Froom (3-2) tallied the win on the mound for South Dakota State after allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six-and one-third innings.
