MINNEAPOLIS – The North Dakota State University baseball team (8-22) suffered a 13-5 loss at Minnesota (13-19) on Tuesday, April 14, at Siebert Field in Minneapolis.
The Bison are scheduled to host Summit League-leading Oral Roberts in a three-game series beginning with game one on Friday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
Ben Petersen went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and a home run to extend his team-best hitting streak to six games, while
John Skrbec also recorded a homer and RBI.
After spending the first-half of the season injured, Bison right-handed pitcher
Sean Terres threw two innings of scoreless baseball in his first appearance on the mound since last season. The redshirt sophomore from Cold Spring, Minn., didn't allow an earned run or hit while recording one strikeout and two walks.
Left-hander
Blake Stockert (1-2) took the loss on the mound for NDSU after allowing six earned runs on seven hits.
NDSU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBI single up the middle from Petersen, but Minnesota rattled off six runs in the bottom-half of the frame to take a 6-1 advantage.
After the Golden Gophers scored another run in the fourth to make it 7-1, the Bison plated four runs on two hits in the fifth to trim the deficit to 7-5.
Paul Funk was hit by a pitch to lead-off the inning, before
Drew Fearing reached on a fielder's choice. After a fly out, Petersen stepped to the plate and connected on a 1-1 pitch, powering the ball over the left field fence to plate three runs. It was Petersen's third homer of the season. Skrbec delivered the second round-tripper of the inning two at bats later, powering a two-out, 2-0 pitch down the left field line and over the fence, making it 7-5. It was his fourth long ball of 2015.
That would be as close as the Bison would get the remainder of the contest, though, as the Gophers scored six unanswered runs to take the 13-5 win.
Connor Schaefbauer went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI to lead Minnesota offensively, while RHP Reggie Meyer (1-1) tallied his first win of the season for the Gophers after allowing just one earned run on four hits with one strikeout in four innings of work.
