AUSTIN, Texas – North Dakota State sophomore thrower Alex Renner came within two centimeters of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the shot put on Friday at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, highlighting the efforts of the Bison men's track & field team.
Renner, a Watertown, S.D., native, threw 61-02.25 (18.65m) on his final attempt in the shot put to finish in 14th place, with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships in Oregon. With the 12th-place finisher at 61-03.00 (18.67m), Renner was less than one inch away from earning his first trip to the national meet.
It was the second-best shot put mark of Renner's career. He also took 37th place in the hammer throw earlier in the day.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Bison senior Brett Kelly ran more than half of his 3,000m steeplechase race without a shoe on his right foot after losing it in traffic. Kelly was running among the top three in his heat when the shoe came off, and he ultimately finished eighth in the heat and 21st overall. His time of 9:02.55 was a lifetime-best performance with one shoe.
Kelly entered the meet ranked 41st in the West Region and outperformed that pre-meet rank by 20 places.
Junior Brandt Berghuis made his third career appearance at the NCAA West Prelims and his second in the hammer throw, earning a 25th-place finish with the second-best throw of his career, 198-6 (60.51m).
Junior Parker McKittrick ran a lifetime-best 14.26 seconds in the first round of the 110m hurdles, tying him for fifth-fastest in NDSU history. He placed 33rd in the meet after entering ranked 44th in the region.
Bison freshman Payton Otterdahl took part in his second event of the NCAA Prelims, posting a mark of 55-02.75 (16.83m) in the shot put for 43rd place.
NDSU will have four men compete in the javelin on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. to wrap up competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.
