Competition Format
Twenty-four men and relay teams qualified to the NCAA Outdoor Championships through the NCAA Preliminary Rounds format. In the javelin, a semifinal and final round will be contested on the same day. Each competitor is allowed three attempts in the semifinal round. The nine best marks will advance to the final round for three more attempts.
All-America Honors
The top eight finishers in all events will earn first team All-American honors, places 9 through 16 will be named second team All-Americans, and all other national meet competitors will receive honorable mention All-American status.
Big Improvements
Freshman Austin Schmidt has thrown lifetime-best marks in the javelin in each of his last three meets. At the Lyle Hokanson Classic in Fargo on May 1, he posted a mark of 208-2, an improvement of 8 feet, 1 inch. At the Summit League Outdoor Championships in Macomb, Ill., on May 13, Schmidt threw 220-2, topping his previous best by 12 feet. At the NCAA West Prelims on May 30, he hit a new best of 226-7, tacking on another 6 feet, 5 inches.
In the UK
Sophomore Matti Mortimore ranks third among all British men in the javelin this year with his school-record mark of 237-4 (72.33m) to win the Mt. SAC Relays on Apr. 17.
Atop the List
While Mortimore and Schmidt rank first and fourth, respectively, all-time at NDSU in the javelin, there is even more talent on the runway in Fargo. Current Bison junior Tyler Parker is No. 2 on the all-time list, and No. 3 is a well-known name on the national javelin scene – NDSU graduate (2005-09) and current volunteer assistant coach Riley Dolezal who won the 2013 USATF championship in the javelin and ranks third in the country this year.
Different Backgrounds
Mortimore and Schmidt came to the NDSU track & field program down very different paths. Mortimore won English national javelin titles in the under-15, under-17 and under-20 age divisions and transferred to NDSU from the University of New Orleans last summer. Schmidt was the North Dakota Class B state champion in the javelin last year for Stanley/Powers Lake HS and elected to stay in his home state to compete collegiately for the Bison.
Deep Squad
The Bison men are one of only three teams in the nation with three javelin throwers over 225 feet this season. NDSU was the only school in the nation with four entries in the javelin at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds.
