FARGO, N.D. – Freshman Roxy Roemer scored a goal with three minutes remaining in double overtime to lift the North Dakota State University women's soccer team (3-3-0) to a thrilling 1-0 victory over the University of North Dakota (2-3-1) in front of a crowd of 1,007 on Friday, Sept. 11, at Dacotah Field.
"I thought it was a tremendous game. UND came out with a lot of intensity and pressure, and we dealt with it early," NDSU head coach Mark Cook said. "As the game wore on, we got better and better and created a lot of chances. It was disappointing it was only 1-0, but we'll take the win."
Roemer, a native of Shakopee, Minn., corralled a pass from junior Lauren Miller and fired it into the left corner of the goal in the 107th-minute of the match, securing the triumph for NDSU. It was Roemer's first collegiate goal and Miller's second assist of the season.
The Bison nearly netted the game-winner twice in the early minutes of the second overtime period after junior Amy Yang hit the crossbar on shots in the 102nd and 105th minutes.
Senior goalkeeper Sierra Bonham posted her second shutout of the season after going the full 107 minutes between the pipes and making four saves, including three crucial saves in the second overtime, to improve to 3-3-0 on the season.
For the match, North Dakota State outshot UND, 23-12, including a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. The Bison also posted a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks taken.
UND was paced by freshman Katie Moller, who tallied a match-high seven shots.
North Dakota freshman goalkeeper Olivia Swenson took the loss to fall to 2-3-1 overall after making nine saves but surrendering the game-winning goal.
North Dakota State is scheduled to return to action on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Iowa State. First-kick from Ames, Iowa, is slated for 1 p.m.
