The North Dakota State University men's cross country team will compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional in Ames, Iowa, on Friday, Nov. 10. The men's 10-kilometer race is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. (CT) at the ISU Cross Country Course, following the women's 6k at 10:45 a.m.
Â
The NCAA Midwest Regional will feature runners from 30 teams spanning nine states (Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota). NDSU enters the meet with a No. 13 regional ranking.
Â
The Bison men finished 19th as a team last season. Junior Derek Warner is the top returning NDSU runner from that race, taking 110th place overall.
Â
NDSU is expected to enter seven men in Friday's race – Alex Bartholomay, Brant Gilbertson, Tim Heikkila, Evan Kottsick, Connor Schank, Elliott Stone and Warner – with Gilbertson the lone senior among that group.
Â
A total of 31 teams will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 18. The top two teams at each of the nine regional meets automatically qualify, leaving 13 at-large bids. The selection process looks at each team's performance over the course of the season, along with their finish at the NCAA Regional.
Â
Individually, 38 additional athletes per gender will qualify and the top four runÂners at each regional not on a qualifying team will automatically be selected.
Â
The Bison will carry momentum into the regional meet following a runner-up team finish at the Summit League Championships on Oct. 28. Stone, Gilbertson and Heikkila all finished in the top 7 at the conference meet.
