Scene Setter
The North Dakota State women's basketball team is slated to host the Creighton Bluejays and the New Hampshire Wildcats this weekend inside the Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex. The Bison will host the Bluejays on Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m., while facing the Wildcats on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. Sunday's game is part of a doubleheader with the men, which starts at 1 p.m.
Creighton Series History
The Bison are 1-8 all-time against the Bluejays in a series that started in 1981. Creighton has won the last four meetings, including a 63-42 victory in Omaha on Dec. 16, 2012. NDSU is 2-3 all-time against the Big East Conference.
New Hampshire Series History
Sunday will be the first meeting between the Bison and Wildcats. NDSU is 1-2 all-time against the American East Conference.
Summit League Food Fight
NDSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council will be accepting non-perishable food items and monetary donations this Friday for the Summit League Food Fight, an annual competition among league schools. All donations benefit the Fargo-Moorhead Emergency Food Pantry. Last year, NDSU collected nearly 7,000 pounds of food. Donations will be accepted in the main lobby. Fans unable to attend these events may donate funds online to @NDSU-SAAC using the Venmo mobile app.
Bison Notes
- The Bison improved to 33-18 all-time in season openers with the win over Mayville State on Tuesday. It was the third-straight win in an opener, while they have won seven of their last eight opening games.
- Four players scored in double figures for the Bison in the season-opening win over Mayville State on Tuesday. Michelle Gaislerova and Tyrah Spencer led NDSU with 13 points apiece, a career-high for Spencer.
- Tyrah Spencer connected on both of her 3-point attempts on Tuesday. Spencer attempted just nine long balls all of last season. Spencer is one of 11 players in the nation that attempted multiple 3-pointers on the opening night of the season without a miss.
- The Bison grabbed 11 offensive rebounds in the win over Mayville State. NDSU scored 10 second chance points, while limiting the Comets to just three second chance points.
- NDSU had lockdown defense to close the third quarter and start the fourth quarter against the Comets. In over a nine minute span, the Bison held the Comets without a field goal and went on a 13-2 run.
- After the opening night of games across the country, the Bison rank third in the nation in fewest turnovers with nine. They also rank 13th in scoring defense giving up 43 points.
- NDSU returns five players that started at least 13 games last season, including three that started 22 or more games. Sarah Jacobson started all 29 games for the Bison last year.
- The Bison return 74 percent of their scoring from last year, including the top four scorers. Reilly Jacobson led the Bison with 11.6 points per game last year, while Sarah Jacobson averaged 10.1 points per game.
- Of the top 13 returning scorers in The Summit League, NDSU has three of them.
- Among the players in The Summit League that return this year and averaged double digit points per game, Reilly Jacobson is the only player that didn't start at least 24 games. Jacobson started 13 games last year.
- NDSU is one of two schools in The Summit League (Western Illinois) that returns two players that averaged at least 1.7 3-pointers made per game last season. Sarah Jacobson (2.0) and Michelle Gaislerova (1.7) hit the mark for the Bison.
- The Bison return their top three leading rebounders from last season with Reilly Jacobson leading the way with 6.7 per game. Sarah Jacobson (4.5) and Rylee Nudell (3.7) also return for NDSU.
Scouting Creighton
- The Creighton Bluejays were picked to finish fourth in the Big East this season. Creighton also finished fourth in the Big East last year with a 19-13 overall record and 11-7 league record.
- Creighton advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year. In the opening round, the Bluejays beat sixth-seeded Iowa 76-70 before dropping an 86-64 decision to third-seeded UCLA.
- The Bluejays opened the season Wednesday night at South Dakota, where the Coyotes came away with a 77-65 victory. Audrey Faber and Jaylyn Agnew led the Bluejays with 27 and 14 points respectively. Faber and Agnew, along with Ali Greene, are three returning starters from the Bluejays from last season.
- Jaylyn Agnew scored 24 points in the 76-70 win over Iowa in the NCAA Tournament last year. Agnew was also 4-of-6 from downtown in the victory.
Scouting New Hampshire
- The New Hampshire Wildcats were picked to finish seventh in the American East this season. The Wildcats return four players that saw action last season, led by Amanda Torres' 2.6 points per game.
- Projected starters Ashley Storey and Maggie Ahearn sat out last season, but will be available this season. Storey missed the 2017-18 season after having surgery, but averaged 4.9 points per game while seeing action in 31 games during the 2016-17 season. Ahearn transferred to New Hampshire from Providence, where she appeared in five games during the 2016-17 season. Her first collegiate action came against North Dakota State while playing for Providence.
- New Hampshire will open the season Friday night at Minnesota. It will be the first meeting between the Wildcats and the Golden Gophers.
Last Time Out:
The North Dakota State women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season Tuesday night with a 49-43 victory over Mayville State at the Scheels Center inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
NDSU raced out to a 9-0 lead in the first 2:36 of the game with four different players scoring in the run. The Bison hit just one more shot for the rest of the quarter, as the Comets closed the frame on a 9-2 run to cut the Bison lead to 11-9 after the first quarter.
Mayville State hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the second quarter, but NDSU went on a 10-5 run over a 6:44 span to take a 21-20 lead with :47 left in the half on a jumper by Michelle Gaislerova. Down by one, Rylee Nudell hit a layup and free throw with :02 left in the half to give the Bison a 24-22 lead at the break.
Neither team led by more than one throughout most of the third quarter until Tyrah Spencer hit a layup and 3-pointer to put the Bison ahead for good. Over a more than nine minute span to end the third quarter and start the fourth quarter, the Bison held the Comets without a field goal en route to a 13-2 run. Gaislerova hit a 3-pointer with 1:41 to play for the final points of the game in the 49-43 victory.
Spencer and Gaislerova led the Bison with 13 points, a new career-high for Spencer. Nudell and Emily Dietz joined them in double figures with 10 points apiece. Kylee Heurung led the Comets with 11 points. Dietz led the Bison with six rebounds, while Marina Fernandez grabbed five boards. Fernandez had a game-high four assists, while Spencer and Cirkeline Rimdal each dished out two. Gaislerova and Danneka Voegeli each had two steals, a career-high for both.
NDSU was 20-of-59 (33.9%) from the floor and 3-of-12 from downtown. The Comets were 16-of-45 (35.6%) from the field and 6-of-32 (18.8%) from beyond the arc. The Bison were 6-of-14 (42.9%) at the free throw line, while Mayville State was 5-of-10 at the charity stripe. NDSU dominated the specialty stats, holding advantages in points in the paint (22-14), off turnovers (15-9) and second chance (10-3). Mayville State had a 12-2 advantage in bench scoring.
Sweet Home Fargo
The Bison will play three home games at the Scheels Center before hitting the road for the first time. In addition to the victory over Mayville State on Tuesday, NDSU will host Creighton (Nov. 9) and New Hampshire (Nov. 11). The first road contest for the Bison is Nov. 17 at Wisconsin, which is the start of four-straight games on the road to close the month of November.
2018-19 NDSU Women's Basketball Captains Announced
Rylee Nudell, Tyrah Spencer and Marina Fernandez have been voted team captains for the Bison for the upcoming 2018-19 season. This is the second year that Spencer has been voted a captain.
NDSU Women's Basketball Picked Seventh In Summit League Preseason Poll
The North Dakota State Bison women's basketball team was voted seventh in the Summit League preseason poll released by the league office.
South Dakota State was tabbed the preseason favorite with 24 first-place votes, while South Dakota was picked second with the remaining nine first-place votes.
The Summit League finished 12th out of 32 conferences in RPI last season.
On the Horizon
The Bison hit the road for the first time on Nov. 17, as they travel to Big 10 foe Wisconsin. It will be the first meeting between the Bison and the Badgers. Tipoff is scheduled for Noon in Madison, Wis.
MidcoSN to Televise Every NDSU Women's Basketball Home Game in 2018-19
MidCo has announced that all 14 NDSU home games during the 2018-19 season will be broadcast live on MidCo Sports Network. All games will either be on MidcoSN or MidcoSN2. In addition, all home games will be covered by ESPN+ or ESPN3. Road games at Omaha (Jan. 6), South Dakota State (Jan. 23), North Dakota (Feb. 7) and South Dakota (Feb. 28) will also be on the Midco Sports Network.
