NDSU Takes Pair to Close out LMU Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Jacquelyn Sertic struck out 22 and picked up two wins as North Dakota State shut out Fairfield 4-0 and defeated Monmouth 5-2 at the LMU Tournament played Sunday, March 18, at Smith Field. The Bison have won eight games in a row.

NDSU (17-7) is scheduled to play No. 11-ranked Baylor (17-4) at 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, in the LSU Round Robin.

Jacquelyn Sertic (13-4) recorded her third straight shutout with a two-hitter against Fairfield (6-15) in the first game. Sertic struck out 12 and walked two. The Bison kept the shutout intact in the sixth inning when first baseman Vanessa Anderson threw out a runner at the plate.

Katie Shoultz opened the game with an infield single, moved to second on an error, advanced to third on Zoe Stavrou's fly out and scored on Bre Beatty's sacrifice fly.

Beatty took care of the scoring in the fifth inning with a two-out home run to left field, her third of the season, to extend the lead to 2-0. Beatty led NDSU with two hits.

North Dakota State closed out the scoring in the top of the sixth when Lauren Reimers rapped a two-out, two-run double to left center.

Destinee Pallotto (5-5) and Lauryn Rhinehart pitched for Fairfield with Pallotto taking the loss. Mikayla Rubin and Lacey Olaff both singled for the Stags.

All the scoring came in the first inning of game two between NDSU and Monmouth. The Bison exploded for five runs in the top of the frame. Anderson ripped a bases-loaded infield single to chase home the first, Maddie Hansen cleared the bases with a three-run single to right center. Hansen scored on a Tabby Heinz ground out. Hansen had two hits.

Monmouth (8-12) answered in the bottom of the first on Katie Baron's RBI double and Amber Wozniak's run-scoring single.

The Hawks chased Bison starter KK Leddy in the third, but Sertic settled things down quickly and retired 14 of 15 batters faced. She struck out 10 and walked one over the final 4.2 innings of work. Sertic reached double-figure strikeouts for the ninth time this season including the last four outings in a row.
