Stroh Breaks NDSU Hammer Record, Climbs NCAA Performance List

LONG BEACH, Calif. – North Dakota State senior thrower Steffan Stroh extended his hammer throw school record to headline the efforts of the Bison men's track & field team in southern California Friday.
Stroh improved his hammer throw personal best by eight inches, throwing 218-3 (66.53m) at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State. The Underwood, Minn., native now ranks among the nation's top 20 in the event this year.
Senior Austin Schmidt (Stanley, N.D.) tied his career-best in the javelin with a throw of 226-7 (69.07m) at the Beach Invitational. He ranks fourth in NDSU history and top-25 in the NCAA this season.
Senior Brant Gilbertson registered a PR of 8:56.00 in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays, moving up to third on the NDSU all-time list and likely locking up a spot at the NCAA West Prelims for the second straight year.
Bison sophomore Tim Heikkila clocked a personal-best 3:48.43 in the 1500m at the Mt. SAC Relays, winning his heat and ranking No. 5 all-time at NDSU. Heikkila cut more than four seconds off his previous best 1500m time. Redshirt freshman Alex Bartholomay also trimmed four seconds off his PR in the 1500m, winning his heat in 3:53.99.
At Long Beach State, Junior Kelle'Mon Hinton (Ellendale, N.D.) registered a long jump personal-best by nearly seven inches, going 22-09.00 (6.93m). Freshman Eric VanErp (Battle Lake, Minn.) recorded a season-best mark in the triple jump, leaping 45-10.50 (13.98m).
Freshman pole vaulter Noah Shafer cleared an outdoor personal-best 15-7 (4.75m) at the Beach Invitational.
Stroh also took second place among collegians in the invitational hammer throw at the Mt. SAC Relays early on Friday, throwing 213-1 (64.94m) before posting his school-record performance later in the day.
