FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State has added a two-game home-and-home series with Towson to complete its 11-game football schedule for the 2021 season announced Thursday, Dec. 12.
The game on Sept. 18, 2021, at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md., will be NDSU's second road game against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent. The Bison made their first trip to Delaware earlier this season.
The home-and-home agreement with Towson includes a return trip to Fargo for the Tigers on Sept. 21, 2024, which is part of a 12-game regular season. NDSU is already scheduled to play at Colorado on Aug. 31 that year.
Towson finished 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the CAA this year. The Tigers, who advanced to play North Dakota State for the 2013 national championship, have made three FCS playoff appearances including a first-round game in 2018.
North Dakota State will open the 2021 season with back-to-back home games, including another CAA opponent. NDSU and Albany will meet for the first time in program history Sept. 4, 2021, before the Bison host Valparaiso for the second time Sept. 11, 2021.
The NDSU-Albany game will be a matchup of programs currently led by the top two freshmen in the FCS. Bison quarterback Trey Lance won the 2019 STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award as the national freshman of the year, and Great Danes quarterback Jeff Undercuffler was second in the voting.
With two Colonial Athletic Association opponents, the 2021 schedule will be the fifth time in eight years that the Bison face at least two teams from either the CAA or Big Sky Conference in regular season non-conference play. Along with the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the three leagues made up half of the 2019 FCS playoff field.
"Non-conference opponents are incredibly important as we build out our schedule each year," said NDSU director of athletics Matt Larsen. "Adding two CAA schools strengthens our schedule with quality games for our fan base and should provide great preparation for competing in the best FCS conference in the country."
North Dakota State will have a bye week before opening the 2021 Missouri Valley Football Conference schedule on the road against North Dakota on Oct. 2. The Bison will have home conference games against Northern Iowa, Missouri State, Indiana State and South Dakota in 2021.
