SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State (2-1, 0-0 WAC) used a walk-off single in the opener and eight runs in the nightcap to take a doubleheader from the North Dakota State (1-2, 0-0 Summit) baseball team Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field.
It took until the seventh inning of the opener for either team to score a run. NDSU struck first, as
Jake Malec singled to drive in
Nick Emanuel for the first run of the game. The Hornets answered in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly to tie the game. The winning run came in the bottom of the ninth, as a one-out pinch hit single by Nick Iwasa won the game for the Hornets, 2-1.
Peter Brookshaw and Malec each had a pair of hits for the Bison.
Max Loven had a no decision on the mound, as he struck out six, walked one and allowed two hits in six innings of work.
Hunter Koep suffered the loss, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings of work. Koep walked one and struck out three.
In the nightcap, Sacramento State scored three runs in the first inning. The Bison cut into the lead in the second inning, as
Ben Tallman hit a two out single to left field to drive in
Zach Solano. The Hornets added a run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to push the lead to 7-1. A one-out double to right center by Solano in the eighth inning drove in
Charley Hesse and
Tyler Hillman. The Hornets added the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning for the 8-3 victory.
Solano and
Sean Noel each had a pair of hits in the nightcap, while Solano drove in a pair of runs.
Mitch O'Connor suffered the loss on the mound, giving up three earned runs on three hits, while striking out a pair, in an inning of work. The Bison used seven pitchers out of the bullpen, as
Blake Tritch struck out three in two innings, while
Kyle Ferderer struck out a pair in 1.2 innings of work.
The Bison return to action on Friday, Feb. 22, as they face Portland in Edinburg, Texas.
