AUSTIN, Texas – Two inches were all that separated North Dakota State senior Payton Otterdahl from his third national title this year.
Otterdahl led the discus halfway through Friday night's competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, throwing 205-0 (62.48m) on his third attempt. Texas Tech senior Eric Kicinski recorded a mark of 205-2 (62.53m) in the fourth of six rounds, topping Otterdahl by two inches and clinching the team national title for the Red Raiders.
The Rosemount, Minn., native had five of his six throws travel at least 60 meters on Friday night. Otterdahl entered the meet ranked third in the NCAA.
Otterdahl concludes his senior season with four top-four finishes in the throwing events at the NCAA Championships – national titles in the shot put and weight throw indoors, the second-place finish in the discus, and fourth place in the outdoor shot put.
Otterdahl is the first Bison men's track & field athlete to capture four first-team All-America honors in a career. He is the only NDSU track & field athlete to ever earn four All-America honors in the same year.
