Reilly Powers NDSU Past Western Illinois, 3-1

FARGO, N.D.   –  After dropping the opening set, North Dakota State rallied to win the final three sets to secure the 3-1 win over Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.

With the win, NDSU (11-14, 5-8 Summit) completes the season sweep of Western Illinois (4-20, 3-10 Summit) and has won 16 of the last 17 meetings with the Leathernecks.

Raegen Reilly paced the Bison logging her fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 59 assists to go along with 11 digs. Ali Hinze also contributed a double-double with 19 kills and 14 digs, while Syra Tanchin reached the 20-kill mark for the third time this season with a match-high 20. Taylor Quan registered a match-best 22 digs on the defensive end of the floor to round out the top performers.

As a team, NDSU posted a .368 hitting percentage and matched a season-high 70 kills. The Bison also passed out a season-best 68 assists and notched 73 digs.

After both teams exchanged points to open the match, NDSU pulled back within one, 18-17, following a kill from Morgan Middleton. WIU responded with a quick 3-0 run to stretch its lead up to 21-17 and force an NDSU timeout. The Leathernecks went on to close out the set, 25-20.

NDSU quickly took control of the second frame doubling up Western Illinois, 10-5. The Bison continued to roll from there increasing their lead up to seven, 17-10, following a kill from Alexis Boling. NDSU held off Western Illinois the rest of the way to win stanza, 25-19.

The Bison carried momentum over into the third set opening up a 16-13 lead following a kill from Reilly. The Leathernecks then battled their way back cutting the deficit down to 23-22 to force a timeout. Tanchin responded for NDSU connecting on back-to-back kills to seal the win, 25-22.

The Bison began to put the match away sprinting out to a 13-5 edge following kill from Hinze in the fourth set. NDSU went on to close out the frame, 25-14, and completed the come-from-behind win, 3-1.

NDSU will be on the road at Omaha (13-8, 10-1 Summit) on Thursday night. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
