'NDSQBU' Documentary Spotlights Emergence of Trey Lance and an FCS Dynasty

CHICAGO – When Trey Lance becomes one of the early picks of the 2021 NFL Draft, it will be further affirmation of North Dakota State University's status as the greatest FCS college football dynasty.
Much of the success surrounds Bison quarterbacks, with Lance expected to be their second top-10 selection in the last six drafts.
Stats Perform will tell the story in "NDSQBU: The Emergence of Trey Lance in an Unlikely College Football Dynasty," the initial episode of its new docuseries that focuses on Division I FCS. It will first air on Bally Sports Regional Networks (formerly Fox Sports Networks) and a small number of other networks beginning on Monday, April 26 – three days prior to the start of the April 29-May 1 draft (see list of initial air dates below). The documentary also will premiere on TheAnalyst.com on Friday, April 23 at 8 p.m. EST/7 p.m. CST.
"I think it's every kid's dream that's playing college football, especially at the Division I level, to play in the NFL one day," Lance said.
"NDSQBU," a production of The Analyst and Stats Perform, is told through original interviews with North Dakota State coaching staff, players, longtime local media personalities in Fargo, the Lance family at their southwest Minnesota home, and, of course, Trey Lance.
Lance carved out his own remarkable place during an already incredible decade at North Dakota State, which captured eight of the nine FCS national championships between the 2011-19 seasons. Included during the decade were six straight wins over larger FBS-level opponents and 33- and 37-game winning streaks, the latter run eventually extended to an FCS-record 39 games.
"Something that started as us wanting to tell a story about Trey's freshman season inevitably converged with the origins of NDSU football's success. Both threads are compelling underdog stories in their own right," said The Analyst editor-in-chief Kevin Chroust, the short documentary's director. "We went to Fargo, and the more we learned, the idea of this being a five- or 10-minute segment only about Trey went out the window rather quickly."
At the forefront of the excellence has been quarterbacks such as Carson Wentz and Easton Stick going to the NFL with the regularity of a top FBS school. Lance is next in line, having chosen to play at NDSU over other programs that wanted him to line up as an "athlete" or on defense instead of behind center. He rewarded the Bison in 2019 with one of the best individual seasons in FCS history, accounting for a combined 42 passing and rushing touchdowns without throwing an interception while directing a 16-0 national championship team. He became the first player to receive the Walter Payton (FCS offensive player of the year) and Jerry Rice (FCS freshman player of the year) awards in the same season.
"Had we written a script for the season," said Angie Lance, Trey's mother, "we never would have dared write how it turned out."
Stats Perform provides leading national coverage of FCS football, including the weekly Top 25 national media poll as well as the major national individual awards – the Payton, Rice, Buck Buchanan (FCS defensive player of the year), Eddie Robinson (FCS coach of the year) and Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award. The new docuseries is under the direction of executive producer Gary Reasons, the two-time Super Bowl-winning linebacker, and the staff of The Analyst, the hub for the FCS coverage.
"I'm excited to be working with Stats Perform as they continue to shine a brighter light on the excellence of FCS football," Reasons said. "With some of the greatest football players of all-time coming from the FCS ranks, there are many tremendous and uplifting life stories to share."
