BROOKINGS, S.D. - Freshmen pitchers Grace Glanzer and Tori Kniesche combined for 15 strikeouts and allowed only two hits over 14 innings as South Dakota State swept North Dakota State 3-0 and 1-0 in a Summit League softball doubleheader Friday, May 7, at the Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.
Glanzer carried a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings before
Sam Koehn ripped a single through the middle for NDSU's only hit in the opener. Glanzer (15-3) finished with four strikeouts and walked two.
Kniesche struck out six of the first eight batters she faced before
Emilee Buringa's infield single in the third inning. Kniesche (19-1) fanned 11 and only allowed a two-out walk in the fifth to
Cameryn Maykut the rest of the way.
South Dakota State (36-5, 19-1 Summit) plated an unearned run in the first inning of the opener and got a pair of solo home runs in the sixth from Jocelyn Carrillo and Cheyanne Masterson.
In the second game, SDSU led off the fourth with a Kelsey Lenox walk before Masterson's one-out double off the wall in right-center scored pinch runner Olivia Pfeifer with the game's only run.
Lainey Lyle (6-6) pitched all six innings for North Dakota State (16-26, 11-10 Summit) in the opener allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
NDSU's
Paige Vargas (9-9) struck out a career-high 10 for the second time in her past three appearances. Vargas allowed three hits and walked five in six innings of work.
The Bison and Jackrabbits are scheduled to play another doubleheader Saturday, May 8. Game time has been moved up two hours to 10 a.m.
