Carl "Buck" Nystrom, a coach on North Dakota State University's first national championship football team in 1965, passed away Sept. 25 in his hometown of Marquette, Mich. He was 88 years old.
Nystrom was NDSU's offensive line coach under Darrell Mudra from 1963 to 1965 and Ron Erhardt in 1966. He was inducted into the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.
Although his tenure at NDSU was only four years, Nystrom was a major cog in the resurrection of Bison football in the mid 1960s. The 1964 Bison football media guide called him "the man who has made Bison football tough and respected to any opponent that dare test them."
His stop at NDSU was just a small step in an outstanding coaching career. Nystrom was part of national championship teams at NDSU (1965), Oklahoma (1968) and Northern Michigan (1976).
An All-American for Michigan State, Nystrom played in and won two Rose Bowls (1954 and 1956), and coached in 12 bowl games including the 1962 and 1968 Orange Bowls, the 1969 Blue Bonnet Bowl, the 1984 Cherry Bowl, and the 1985 All-American Bowl.
A funeral for Nystrom will be held in November.
His son, Kyle Nystrom, was the assistant head coach and linebackers coach for the Bison under head coach Craig Bohl for three seasons from 2006 through 2008.
