NDSU Claims Zach Johnson Invitational Title

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - The North Dakota State men's golf team held off a late charge from Iowa State to claim the 2022 Zach Johnson Invitational on Tuesday at the Glen Oaks Country Club.

The Bison shot -4 in the third round to finish the two-day event at -12, two shots ahead of Iowa State and 16 shots ahead of Valparaiso in third.

Brock Winter led the way for the Bison on the day, as he fired a -4 round of 67 to springboard up the leaderboard into eighth place at -2 for the tournament. Winter had six birdies in the round, matching Ian Simonich with the best round of the tournament for the Bison. Winter also had two rounds in the 60s for the three-round event, one of three Bison to do so.

Nate Deziel and Ian Simonich also had two rounds each in the 60s. Deziel carded a -3 score of 68 in the final round, as he shot back-to-back rounds of 68 as he finished in a tie for fifth overall at -5 for the event.

Simonich, who carded a +1 round of 72 on Tuesday was the other Bison with two rounds in the 60s. Simonich also finished as the top Bison, as he had a three-round score of -6 to finish in a tie for second.

Nate Adams and Gavin Cronkhite wrapped up the scoring for the Bison on Tuesday with rounds of 73. Adams finished the event in a tie for 12th at +2, while Cronkhite finished at +7, in a tie for 22nd in the 81-golfer field.

The victory is the second of the season for the Bison and the third-straight tournament finish in the top two. Dating back to last season, the Bison have finished in the top two in five of the last six tournaments. The win is also the second-straight in the event, as the Bison were co-champions at the Zach Johnson Invitational last season.

The Bison will now have a couple weeks off before two events in the second half of October to wrap up the fall semester. The Bison will head to the Paintbrush Invitational next. The event will take place over three days on October 17-19 in Denver, Colorado.
