NDSU Volleyball Falls at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Taylor Quan and Kelley Johnson both reached the 1,000 career digs plateau as the North Dakota State volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision at St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon at Schoenecker Arena.
Ali Hinze recorded her fifth straight double-double with a season-best 21 kills and 11 digs. Johnson reached the 50-assist mark for the third time this season with a game-high 50. The Eagan, Minn., native also posted 16 digs to surpass the 1,000 career digs mark. Johnson has totaled 1,013 digs over five seasons at NDSU.
As a team, the Bison (11-7, 3-4 Summit) totaled a season-best 94 digs on the defensive side of the court. Quan paced NDSU with a season-best 27 digs to reach the 1,000 career digs mark and has contributed 1,025 over four seasons at NDSU. Logan O'Brien added a season-high 20 digs, while Johnson (16), Ava Schmoll (11) and Hinze (11) also reached double figures.
After NDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead, the two teams traded points throughout the third frame to find themselves deadlocked, 21-21. St. Thomas (5-13, 1-6 Summit) closed the set on a momentum-shifting 4-2 run to take the third stanza, 25-23. The Tommies carried the energy into the fourth set sprinting out to a 6-1 edge after an attack error. NDSU fought back trimming deficit down to one, 20-19, following a kill from Alexis Boling. However, St. Thomas closed the frame on a 5-2 run to win the set, 25-21, after a service ace from Morgan Kealy.
St. Thomas continued to storm back into the fifth set opening up a 9-4 lead following a kill from Megan Wetter. The Tommies then began to put the match away pushing their edge to 12-5 after an attack error. St. Thomas held off NDSU the rest of the way to win the set, 15-7, and the match, 3-2.
NDSU will be back in action hosting North Dakota on Tuesday. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m., at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
