FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State soccer snapped multiple streaks with a dominant 1-0 victory over Summit League leading Denver Thursday night at Dacotah Field to close the season for the Bison.
The victory for NDSU snapped a nine-game losing skid to Denver and also snapped the Pioneers' 57-game streak of being unbeaten in regulation in Summit League play. NDSU's win over Denver was the first in regulation for any Summit League team over Denver since October 23, 2016.
Senior Paige Goaley put the Bison in front in the 69th minute as she smashed home a rebound from Olivia Watson's header that went off the crossbar. It was Goaley's third goal of the season and she finishes her career with 10 for NDSU.
Fellow senior Abby Wilkinson then made several crucial saves late in the game to deny Denver's late push to find an equalizer. Wilkinson recorder her sixth cleansheet of the season and finishes her career with 11 overall, sixth most in NDSU history, along with 180 career saves.
The Bison controlled a majority of the opening half, putting Denver on the back foot and drawing several fouls in the offensive third. The Bison had shots from Amaya Garrett and Watson in the box that were blocked in the opening shots of the game for either side in the 27th minute.
In the 35th minute, Watson would have another opportunity after working past goalkeeper Molly Wissman, but her shot was cleared off the line by a Pioneer defender. Denver would have their first shot in the 37th minute.
In the second half, NDSU again controlled most of the half, pushing several shots toward Denver's goal. Alicia Nead just missed a shot that skimmed over the top of the goal in the 48th minute. Goaley and Watson followed with shots that forced saves.
Despite NDSU's win, the Bison season comes to a close, falling one point shy of the Summit League tournament.
