PHOENIX, Ariz. – North Dakota State men's golfer
Nate Adams picked up medalist honors to lead the Bison to a second-place finish at the GCU Invitational Tuesday afternoon. The Bison closed in on day one leader No. 29 TCU, but finished second, trailing by one shot after the final round.
Adams, who shot a -7 round of 64 on Monday to take the lead, never trailed on Tuesday as he carded a -3 round of 68 for the second time in the tournament to win the individual title by two strokes over TCU's Gustav Frimodt. Adams finished at -13 with a three-round total of 200.
Adams started his round with a birdie, but finished the front nine at even after a bogey on seven. However, Adams responded with three birdies and six pars on the back nine to pull away and secure the victory.
It's the second victory of the season for Adams, who also won the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate in late October. It is the fifth overall medalist honor for the Bison this season.
The Bison carded an even-par round of 284 on the final day and finished tied with Grand Canyon at -16. TCU shot +1 on the day and picked up a one-shot win over the Bison and Lopers at -17.
It is the third runner-up finish for the Bison this season to go along with three victories. NDSU has not finished worse than fifth this season, with that result coming in the opening tournament of the year in early September.
Nate Deziel was second on the day for the Bison as he shot his second-straight even-par round of 71. Deziel had three birdies and eagled the par-5 10
th to work back to even after starting the first seven holes at +5. Deziel climbed to finish in a tie for 28
th overall in the 88-golfer field.
Brock Winter finished second overall for the Bison over the two-day event, as he took 11
th overall, finishing at -2. Winter closed out the tournament with a 74 on Tuesday. Winter had four birdies in the round, including three over the final five holes to work back after a rough start.
Finishing two shots back of Winter was
Gavin Cronkhite, who shot a 72 on the final day to finish at even par for the tournament. Cronkhite finished tied for 19
th overall. Crinkhite finished with five birdies in his round.
Wrapping up the scoring on the day for the Bison was
Ian Simonich, who finished with a 73 in the final round. After a birdie, and two bogeys to start the day, Simonich carded 12 straight pars before a bogey, birdie, bogey finish. Simonich finished in a tie for 45
th at +6.
The Bison will now be off until early April when they head to Tacoma, Washington and Chambers Bay Golf Course for the Redhawk Invitational. The Seattle University hosted event will take place April 3-4.
