DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The North Dakota State men's golf team took fourth overall at the 2023 Daytona Beach Spring Invitational held at the LPGA International on Monday and Tuesday.
The Bison shot their best round of the tournament on Tuesday, firing a +2 as a team with a 290 to climb one position. NDSU was second after the first round with a 292, but fell to fifth in the second round after a 299.
Nate Deziel led the way for the Bison, firing a pair of even par rounds as he finished at +3 with a 219 to take 11
th overall. Deziel finished with 11 birdies in the tournament, including six in round one, and tied for fourth most in the tournament field. Deziel finished fourth in par 5 scoring for the week and eighth on the par 4s.
Brock Winter and
Nate Adams finished one shot behind Deziel and in a tie for 15
th overall. Winter cared the only under-par round for the Bison with a 71 in the second round. He shot a 75 in the opening round and closed out the tournament with a 74. Winter led the tournament field with 41 pars and added five birdies over three rounds. Winter finished second in par 3 scoring for the week.
Adams, like Deziel, had even-par rounds to start and end the tournament, but shot a 76 in the second round. Adams finished sixth in pars with 38 and was tied for second in par 5 scoring on the week.
Ian Simonich rounded out the scoring for the Bison, as he finished in a tie for 28
th at 222 (+6). Simonich had a 73 to open up his tournament and followed up a 77 in the second round with one of three even-par rounds on Tuesday. Simonich was second in the tournament field with 40 pars and added five birdies over 54 holes.
Gavin Cronkhite closed out the tournament for the Bison, taking 55
th overall in 116-golfer field with a 228. Cronkhite fired rounds of 76, 77 and 75 to shoot +12 for the week. Cronkhite was also one of just nine golfers to card an eagle in the event.
The Bison will be back in action next week, traveling to the Grand Canyon University Invitational. The two-day event will be March 13-14 at the GCU Golf Course in Phoenix, Arizona.
