Bison Baseball Holds Off Jackrabbits in Regular Season Finale, 12-9

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team plated nine runs in the sixth inning to down South Dakota State in the regular season finale, 12-9, on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bison finish regular season play with a 22-28 (16-7 Summit) overall record and will be the second seed in the Summit League Tournament. NDSU, who is hosting the tournament for the first time in program history, will face third-seeded South Dakota State (22-26, 13-11 Summit) in the first round on Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.

Cadyn Schwabe put the Bison in front, 1-0, scoring on a wild pitch in the third frame, before the Jackrabbits used back-to-back home runs to steal the lead, 3-1, following a two-run home run from Nic Nelson. Jack Steil responded for NDSU with a solo home run of his own to cut the deficit down to one, 3-2, in the fourth inning.

Following the scoreless fifth frame, the Bison exploded for nine runs on seven hits in the sixth to open up an 11-3 lead. James Dunlap sparked NDSU with a two-run double before Stephen Lund cracked a two-run single to push the lead up to 6-3. Will Busch and Schwabe kept the frame going after each delivering RBI singles into left field. Peter Brookshaw followed it up it up with an RBI fly out and Druw Sackett finished the inning with a two-run double into center field to make the score 11-3.

After Carson Hake added a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, the Jackrabbits attempted to rally sending across five runs on five hits in the eighth to pull back within four, 12-8, following an RBI single from Luke Ira. However, NDSU went on to withstand the late surge to pick up the 12-9 win.

The Bison tallied 14 hits as a team with six different players logging multiple hit games. Lund led the way for NDSU notching two runs, two hits and two RBI.

Max Loven made the start on the hill tossing three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Carson Jacobs (2-4) earned the win with three strikeouts over 1.2 innings.
