BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota State soccer fell to South Dakota State 1-0 in Summit League play on Thursday, Sept. 28, at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Jackrabbits (9-2-0, 2-0-0 Summit League) took the lead in the 17th minute with a goal from Jadenn Carrillo on her own rebound. Carrillo was on the end of a through ball and had a one-on-one with NDSU (4-4-4, 0-1-2 Summit League) goalkeeper Abby Wilkinson. Wilkinson made an initial save, but the rebound went straight back to Carrillo who was able to find the open net on her second chance.
Going against a strong wind in the opening half, NDSU's strongest chance came in the 33rd minute on a corner kick, but Hannah Arnold's shot went just wide of the target. Less than three minutes into the second half, Alicia Nead nearly tied the game with a shot from inside the penalty area sailing inches over the crossbar.
In the 72nd minute, Kelsey Kallio had a strong chance from close range, but her shot was denied by SDSU goalkeeper Jocelyn Tanner, and Kallio's rebound attempt went just wide of the left post. Loretta Wacek would then force a diving save from Tanner in the 77th minute.
Wilkinson would finish with seven saves for the Bison in the contest. NDSU recorded just three shots on target.
The Bison remain on the road and head to St. Paul, Minnesota for the second of three straight on the road in Summit League play, as NDSU takes on St. Thomas on Sunday, Oct. 1. The game will be streamed live on the Summit League Network.
