OMAHA, Neb. – North Dakota State soccer started the Summit League season with a 1-1 tie against Omaha Thursday night at Caniglia Field.
The Bison (4-4-3, 0-0-1 Summit League) took the lead in the 12th minute as Morgan Russmann scored her fourth goal of the season, scoring on a right-footed shot off the left post. Amaya Garrett set up the play by winning a ball in the defensive zone and playing a long pass forward that split the Omaha (6-1-3, 0-0-1) defense, setting up Russmann with the scoring opportunity.
Payton Mulberry would make a key save and four overall in the first half to help the Bison head into the break leading 1-0.
The Bison nearly doubled their lead as Devon Kavanagh had a shot cleared off the line in the 82nd minute. The play would be reviewed by VAR but the play stood.
Mulberry would be called into action a few more times in the second half, making three saves including a late tip over the bar to keep the Bison in front heading into the 90th minute.
However, the hosts would finally get their breakthrough as the Mavericks scored on a goal from Alyssa Kellar with 32 seconds remaining. VAR would be called on again for offsides, but the play stood.
It is the second-straight season that the Bison have tied Omaha after a 2-2 tie last season at Dacotah Field.
The Bison are set to return to action on Sunday, as they continue their three-game road swing to begin Summit League play with a trip to Kansas City. The Bison and Roos are set for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
