NDSU Volleyball Falls Short at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State used late runs in all three sets to top the North Dakota State volleyball team, 3-0, in a battle of the only two unbeaten teams in Summit League play on Thursday night at First Bank & Trust Arena.

Baily Randall led the way for NDSU (11-5, 5-1 Summit) posting double digits in kills for the fifth straight match after leading all players with 11 to go along with seven digs. Rya Borer totaled a match-best 19 digs on the defensive end, while Maddy Dombeck distributed a team-best 18 assists. Lauren Jansen rounded out the top performers filling her stat line with 12 digs, seven kills and a season-best four service aces.

NDSU leaned on its defense in the opening frame after totaling 23 digs, including seven from Borer. The two teams worked through a match-high nine ties and four lead changes to find themselves locked, 19-19, following a kill from Randall. The Jackrabbits (12-3, 6-0 Summit) responded with four quick points of their own to open up a 23-19 edge with a kill from Sydni Schetnan. South Dakota State went on to win the frame, 25-21.

Both teams continued to trade points into the second set until the Jackrabbits built a 21-17 advantage with kill from Hannah Klein. The Bison pulled their way back taking advantage of attack errors to cut the deficit to 23-22. However, South Dakota State used a kill from Madison Burr and an ace from Rachel Wieber to seal the frame, 25-22.

NDSU fought back in the third set putting together four straight points to tie the score, 17-17, following back-to-back aces from Jansen. The Jackrabbits then answered with a momentum-shifting 5-0 run to push their lead back up to 22-17. South Dakota State went on to win the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.

NDSU will be back in action at St. Thomas on Saturday. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
