MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – North Dakota State wrestling picked up three wins at No. 11 Minnesota on Sunday, but fell to the Gophers 26-9 at Maturi Pavilion.
Tristan Daugherty,
Max Petersen and
Devin Wasley recorded victories for the Bison, while NDSU had several other tight matches in the dual.
"We didn't secure the outcome we were hoping for but we are proud of the effort," said head coach
Obenson Blanc. "We picked up three good victories and we had a few more close battles, including some against All Americans, which is showing our growth as we compete against some highly-ranked programs."
Wasley secured the final win of the dual for the Bison on his return to Maturi Pavilion, as the Minnesota transfer scored a third-period reversal and then a takedown to top Gabe Nagel at 197 pounds with a 6-3 victory. It is Wasley's eighth-straight win of the season after dropping his first two matches of the year after moving up to 197 from 174 last year. Wasley avenged a major decision loss to Nagel at the Bison Open earlier this season, his last defeat.
At 133 pounds, #28 Daugherty picked up the first win of the day for the Bison, securing a final second takedown over Chris Cannon to break a tie at 1-1 and earn a win by decision. The win gave NDSU a 3-2 lead after Minnesota was docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct.
At 149 pounds, #29 Petersen came from behind to secure a 7-5 win over Drew Roberts to tie the dual at 6-6. Roberts secured the first takedown, but Petersen scored two third-period takedowns for the victory. Petersen improved to 2-0 on the year after a ranked win at Northern Iowa two weeks ago.
#30
Ezekiel Witt nearly pulled off an upset against All American #8 Jore Volk to open the dual at 125. Witt secured the first takedown and had a 5-2 lead before Volk secured a late takedown straight to Witt's back to gain four back points to win 9-5 in the final seconds.
Max Magayna scored the first takedown against #25 Ethan Riddle at 174, but couldn't hold on as Riddle scored two third-period takedowns including one in the final second for the win.
Drew Blackburn-Forst also nearly had a takedown at heavyweight, putting #15 Koy Hopke straight to his back, but momentum carried the two wrestlers out of the circle.
NDSU will have a two-week break, before returning to action on December 20, as the Bison travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on Stanford and Penn State at the Journeymen Collegiate National Duals, hosted at Montgomery Bell Academy. The Bison are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start against Stanford before facing Penn State at 4 p.m.
