NDSU’s Claire Stern Announces Medical Retirement from Basketball

FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State women's basketball team has announced that sophomore forward Claire Stern will no longer pursue a playing career for the Bison and will medically retire from basketball.
Stern appeared in 32 games off the bench and logged 13.7 minutes per game in her freshman season. The Maple Grove, Minn., native averaged 4.1 points per contest and ranked third on the team shooting 82.3 percent from the free throw line. Stern was also named to the Summit League Academic Honor Roll.
"Unfortunately, due to unexpected medical reasons, I have to step away from playing and medically retire from the NDSU Women's Basketball team," said Stern. "I feel so blessed to still be a part of this amazing team and family. I'm excited to embrace a new role and continue supporting my teammates in this next chapter."
"We're obviously disappointed for Claire that her athletic career will be cut short," said head coach Jory Collins. "It's always tougher when it's something out of your control. We're just very grateful she is healthy and able to continue to be a Bison, even if it's in a different capacity. Claire is a super tough young woman and a tremendous role model in how to handle adversity."
