NDSU Wrestling Tops Cal Baptist for Big 12 Win

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State wrestling topped California Baptist 31-7 Sunday afternoon at the Scheels Center inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex, picking up the first Big 12 win of the season for the Bison.
 
North Dakota State dominated with four bonus-point wins and eight of the 10 matches overall, starting with a near pin and a tech fall from #17 Ezekiel Witt in the opening match at 125. Witt had a takedown and near pin inside the first 20 seconds against Cooper Shore and went on to secure a tech fall early in the second period with his fifth takedown of the match.
 
At 133 pounds, #32 Tristan Daugherty extended the Bison lead with a 4-1 decision over Mitchell Neiner. Michael Olson nearly came-from-behind after an injury at 14 pounds, but fell following a late takedown from Richard Murillo, 14-9.
 
The Bison would pick up the next two wins to take control of the dual, starting with a major decision from #21 Max Petersen at 149 pounds, as he secured three takedowns in an 11-2 win over Paul Kelly. The major decision is the 25th bonus-point victory for Petersen in his career.
 
Gavin Drexler then pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the day at 157 pounds, as Drexler had two takedowns in a 9-3 victory over #29 Drayden Morton. It is the 10th ranked victory for Drexler in his career and also his 20th career dual victory.
 
Following a Boeden Greenley loss to Gabriel Schumm at 165 pounds, NDSU would sweep the last four matches. Max Magayna used a takedown and four-point nearfall to top Mason Espinoza 7-3 at 174 pounds.
 
In the 184-pound match, #30 Aidan Brenot used three takedowns and a reversal to gain a commanding lead before securing a turn and slap of the mat to defeat David Alonso for a third-period fall. Brenot picked up his 10th career dual victory and also surpassed 500 career match points in the win.
 
Devin Wasley followed up Brenot with a shutout victory at 197 pounds, topping Eli Sheeren 9-0 to record his fifth-straight win in dual action. Shilo Jones wrapped up the dual for NDSU with a 6-0 victory over Tristan Kemp for his fifth dual win of the season.
 
North Dakota State will remain at home and welcome in Northern Colorado on Friday, January 30. The Bison will take on the Golden Bears with the dual set for 7 p.m. at the Scheels Center inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
