LAS VEGAS - UNLV intercepted three passes including a 23-yard return for touchdown by Andre Porter in the first quarter that proved to be the difference in a 13-7 victory over North Dakota State on Saturday, Oct. 10, before a crowd of 33,516 at Allegiant Stadium.
NDSU's defense limited the Rebels to 255 total yards and two second-half field goals by Ramon Villela from 29 and 24 yards, the latter coming after NDSU failed convert a fourth-and-1 from its own 18-yard line with 14:10 left in the game.
The Bison still had a chance for the go-ahead score in the final 2 minutes, reaching the UNLV 24-yard line on a 28-yard run by quarterback Nathan Hayes. A sack and a holding penalty moved the ball back to the UNLV 41 before Mumu Bin-Wahad's second interception of the game sealed it.
Hayes finished 12 of 22 passing for 124 yards with a 21-yard touchdown to Chris Kiel in the second quarter. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime.
Myles Mitchell led the NDSU rushing attack with 22 carries for 91 yards.
Donovan Woolen made a team-high 11 tackles and had one pass breakup for NDSU, and fellow linebacker Ray James made a career-high eight tackles plus his first career interception.
North Dakota State (5-1, 2-1 MW) returns home to host Nevada at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. The Wolf Pack improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West with a 30-13 road win over UTEP on Saturday.
