GREENWOOD, Ind. – North Dakota State junior forward
Avery Koenen has been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Second Team, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Koenen earns the honors for the first time in her career and joins Amaya Battle (Minnesota), Joyce Edwards (South Carolina), Gianna Kneepkens (UCLA) and Kiki Rice (UCLA) on the second team. The Montevideo, Minn., native was one of three Academic All-America selections to boast a 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate or graduate work.
Koenen becomes the sixth overall player in program history to earn the award and only the third in the NDSU Division I era, joining Lacey Johnson (1st Team, 2005) and Janae Burich (3rd Team, 2012).
Koenen started all 34 games with a career-best 19.4 points per game, which ranked third in the Summit League. Koenen also led the league and ranked seventh in the nation with 21 double-doubles. She hauled in the most rebounds in a single-season in Bison history with 366 and netted 661 points this season, which ranks second all-time in NDSU history.
Earlier this season, Koenen was tabbed an AP All-America Honorable Mention, Summit League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, while being named to the All-Summit League First Team, All-Defensive Team, All-Tournament Team and CSC Academic All-District Team. She was also a finalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award. Koenen helped guide NDSU to a 29-4 overall record this season and its first Summit League regular season title in program history.
